Uniform has been adopt ed at Hillbrook as an expression of communit y. The select ion of uniform items is designed to ensure appropriat e levels of flexibilit y and safet y, as well as providing garment s appropriate t o our workplace. It removes some pot ential for peer pressure regarding dress choice. b. These guidelines have been established t o assist st udent s to make appropriate decisions about their present ation and grooming, to enhance t he personal dignit y of t he st udent and t o promot e t he identit y of t he school in t he wider communit y. This policy at t empt s t o balance the individual right s of st udent s wit h t heir responsibilit y as ambassadors of t he school. c. Whilst equit y is an important principle in this policy, it is acknowledged t hat t here will be occasions when different expect at ions will apply bet ween boys and girls. d. It is not possible t o set out present at ion and grooming rules in a way t hat is ent irely 'black and white'. If discrepancies or uncertaint y occurs, t he S LT will make a final decision. e. The foundation st udent s of the school were involved in t he select ion of st yles of t he uniform and t hrough t he S RC st udent s have continued t o be involved in changes, modifications and updates. It is expected that difficult ies wit h t he uniform, grooming or presentation will be t aken up t hrough t he S RC, or a relevant st aff member. 2. School Uniform a. No other clothing should be subst it ut ed for school uniform, which is t o be worn appropriately whilst at school and t ravelling t o and from school. b. Shoes: Black leat her lace-up school shoes are t he required foot wear. These are to be cleaned and polished at all t imes. c. Boys School Uniform: Black leat her belt , grey socks wit h elast ics as necessary, one of t he t hree school shirt s (polo, or long sleeve wit h t ie), grey school short s. S chool j umper in cold weather. A school hat is t o be worn. Boys’ socks are t o be worn pulled up. S hirt s are to be worn t ucked in. d. Girls School Uniform: Black shoes, full lengt h black unpat terned/ plain st ockings or white t urned down socks. S chool skirt / short s/ long pant s wit h either red/ blue blouse and matching t ie, or the blue school dress wit h tie. S chool j umper in cold weat her. A school hat is t o be worn. Girls’ skirt s are t o be worn below t he knee.

The full sport s uniform consist s of: navy blue Hillbrook logo sport s short s; red and navy Hillbrook logo polo shirt; blue bucket hat or cap; sport s shoes; and whit e or black sport s socks. S chool j umper as required. b. The full sport s uniform must be worn during Physical Recreat ion (PR)/ Physical Education (PE) and, as advised, at ot her event s and classes. c. S chool socks are not permitt ed to be worn wit h t he sport s uniform. Yoga pant s/ leggings are not permit t ed t o be worn wit h t he sport s uniform. d. S t udent s are required t o change int o t heir sport s uniforms during t he break immediately prior to t he PR/ PE lesson, and change out of t heir sport s uniform during t he break immediately following t he PR/ PE lesson. If a PR/ PE lesson falls in Period 1, st udent s are t o change int o t heir sport s uniform upon arrival at school. e. S t udent s who ride their bicycle t o and from school, on t he same day t hat t hey have PR/ PE may wear t he sport s uniform, upon negotiation, wit h their Home Teacher or Year Coordinat or. S t udent s may not wear t heir sport s uniforms home in ot her circumst ances unless direct ly permitt ed by t he school. S uch permissions will be indicated wit h a note from an appropriate st aff member, or via official document at ion for an event . f. Wit h the except ion of 3e, st udent s must t ravel t o and from school in t heir school uniform, regardless of t he form of t ransport or t ime. 4. Hats a. Hat s are an int egral part of t he school uniform, due t o t heir role in ensuring sun safet y. b. School uniform: S t udent s may choose from eit her the blue bucket hat or school formal hat t o wear with t he school uniform. c. Sports/PE uniform: S tudent s are t o wear the blue bucket hat or caps wit h t he sport s uniform. d. S t udent s are t o have hat s wit h t hem on every school day, regardless of season, and are expect ed to wear them to and from school. e. Hat s/ caps must be worn whenever student s are not under t he cover of a built st ruct ure. 5. Hair a. Hair should be of one nat ural colour, worn in a neat conventional st yle. There should be no ext remes of hairst yle or present ation. S ee 1d. b. Girls should wear red, blue, white or black ribbons, elast ic hair t ies or discret e accessories of t he same colours. Girls wit h long hair need t o tie it back fully. It should be worn off t he face and out of t heir eyes. c. Boys should ensure t hat t heir hair is cut in a way t hat is out of t heir eyes, off t he face and above t heir collar. A ‘ short back and sides’ is the usual interpret at ion of t his. Boys’ hair may be cut t o a minimum length of #2 blade when using clippers.

S t udent s are expect ed t o t ake responsibilit y at all t imes for t heir own cleanliness. S t udent s should use deodorant or antiperspirant . 7. Jewellery a. Minimal t asteful, conservat ive j ewellery is accept able with the school uniform. Permissible items are a plain metal ring; a light metal neck and/ or wrist chain; a wat ch. ‘ S mart Watches’ which support messaging, int ernet access or similar communication functions, are not permissible at school. b. Girls may wear one pair of small, plain, matching sleepers or st ud earrings worn in t he lobes of t he ears. Discret e gemst ones or plain met al is accept able. Earrings should not be more than 3mm in size. c. It is not accept able for boys t o wear earrings wit h school uniform. d. Visible body piercing are not permit ted at school, nor are j ewellery ret ainers or spacers. Body piercings must be removed, not covered, when st udent s are at school. 8. Tattoos a. Tat t oos are not accept able wit h t he school uniform, unless t hey are connect ed t o a specific cult ural heritage. 9. Make-Up a. Make-up is not acceptable wit h t he school uniform. 10. Non-Uniform School Occasions a. S t udent s are required t o dress appropriat ely for t he occasion and are expect ed t o do so as ambassadors for t he school, and t o maint ain t he dignit y of our communit y. On t hese occasions it is important t hat st udent s present t hemselves in a manner that is neat , tast eful and meets safet y requirement s. b. Clot hing should be modest and suitable for a workplace.

Where fait h necessit at es, t he school will make appropriat e arrangement s t o balance t hese with school uniform requirement s. Where mat t ers of gender and identit y necessitat e, t he school will make appropriate arrangement s in consult at ion wit h t he school counsellor. b. S enior j erseys are not part of t he school uniform. They are an opt ional it em, which is purchased wit h full knowledge of t his condition 12. Bags a. All st udent s are expect ed to have a Hillbrook school bag. b. These bags were designed to address long t erm concerns over weight of bags, over post ure, and of capacit y. c. Implement ation will involve all Year 7, 8, 9, and 11 st udent s in 2019. This will ext end t o include Year 12 in 2020. 13. Labelling a. All uniform it ems are to be clearly labelled wit h a st udent’ s name, to avoid loss, t heft , confusion and to assist in the return on misplaced items. 14. Breaches of this Policy a. Temporary exceptions: In the event of a uniform item being temporarily unavailable, a note from a relevant st aff member, or a parent / guardian not e signed by a parent and count ersigned by Home Teacher will excuse t he lapse. b. Minor instances: Will include such t hings shirt s unt ucked, t ie down or askew, socks down, incorrect hair ribbon, unpolished shoes. S uch inst ances can expect , in t he first inst ance, a reminder. Ongoing minor breaches of t he uniform st andards would const it ut e a notable instance. c. Notable instances: Will include such t hings as wearing t he wrong shoes, wearing unaccept able piercings, slovenly wearing of t he uniform, failure t o change from sport s/ PE uniform, failure to have a hat, or ongoing minor inst ances. S uch instances can expect , in t he first inst ance, a detention. Ongoing not able breaches of the uniform st andards would const itut e a maj or inst ance. S tudent s who repeatedly are required t o undertake uniform det ent ion will forfeit t he privilege of leaving early on t he last day of t erm. d. Major instance: Failure t o wear school uniform, failure t o remove piercings et c. S uch inst ances would result in a st udent being required to go home to make appropriat e changes. Return t o school would occur only wit h a commit ment t o ensuring adherence to t he uniform, grooming and present ation policy.
