  3. INTRODUCTION Due to the evolving role of the pharmacy technician, the COVID-19 virus and the aging population, there will be an increased demand for trained pharmacy technicians. In this program you will gain the skills and knowledge needed to be a pharmacy technician in a variety of practice settings. This program is recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (ptcb.org). When a completes all courses, they will receive a TCC certificate of completion for the program and will be prepared to choose between two pharmacy technician certification examinations recognized by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy. These exams are: Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (ptcb.org) and Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) with National Healthcare Association (nhanow.org). Program Overview The courses in the TCC - Pharmacy Technician program occurs in an online format. Classes will start in January 2021 and end May/June 2021, Monday through Thursday, 6:00 to 9:00pm. Students will register for two classes at one time and payment is due at the time of registration, cost for the program is not paid all at once. Tuition cost for each course is presented later in this presentation. At this time, the clinical course/placement for this program is pending and when information is available registered students will be updated. Career Opportunities Pharmacy technicians work in a variety of pharmacy environments, in addition to a retail pharmacy (i.e. CVS) or hospital. Pharmacy technicians work for government agencies, mail order companies, long-term care facilities, insurance companies and compound pharmacies. Due to the evolving role of the pharmacy technician, the COVID- 19 virus and the aging population, there will be an increased demand for trained pharmacy technicians. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of pharmacy technicians is projected to grow 4% from 2019 to 2029, faster than average for all occupations.

  4. PHARMACY TECHNICIAN’S ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES A pharmacy technician (PT) works primarily in a retail and hospital setting. A PT will greet patients, process prescriptions, manage inventory and process insurance claims. In both these settings the PT works under a licensed pharmacist. Pharmacy Technician Performs • Effectively Communicate with Patients – A PT is typically on the frontline to greet patients and receive information from the patient to find prescription(s). Oftentimes a PT answers patient questions if a pharmacist consult is not necessary or requested at the time of drop off and pick- up. A PT must practice patience and deliver clear and concise information to all patients. • Manage Accounts – A PT will manage pharmacy accounts, update insurance information, receive payments from patients and tally the payments and receipts each day. • Enter Patient Data – A PT will use a pharmacy software program to electronically create a patient profile. A patient’s information may include contact information, prescription details, insurance claim and any drug interactions and/or allergies.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN’S ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES (CONTINUED) • Process Insurance Claims – A PT will electronically process insurance claims and if there is a mistake or discrepancy with the patient’s insurance company; they will be contacted by the PT and this process can at times be time consuming. • Process Prescriptions and Print Labels – A PT will check prescriptions thoroughly to ensure certain information is included on the label as required by law. Details which require checking include dosage information, patient's name, address and phone number, the physician’s name, and business address. • Properly Measure and Mix Medication - As a PT you will be required to use a digital scale to measure pills or powders, this also includes carefully counting pills and/or measuring the liquid and proper label placement. • Manage Pharmacy Inventory - preparing the prescription and dispensing medication. You must ensure the prescription is filled in correctly. As a pharmacy tech, you must take physical stock counts and reconcile with the computer inventory records, usually at the end of the month or as and when instructed. Expired or nearing expiry medications require shipment back to the pharmaceutical company.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN’S DAILY ACTIVITIES Pharmacy technician’s must be able to perform some standard functional/physical activities while working on the job: ✓ Extended walking and standing daily ✓ Ability to grasp, push, and/or pull ✓ Ability to bend and stoop ✓ Reach, carry and/or lift ✓ Move quickly in response to serving customers ✓ Use of upper/lower body movements ✓ Carry and move equipment

Denton, TX or Phone: 940-383-7498) ✓ International degrees will be accepted in lieu of high school diploma, GED or high school equivalency ✓ Submit a copy of signed Social Security card ✓ Submit a Photo ID that matches first and last name of Social Security card (driver’s license, military ID card, or U.S. Passport) ✓ Submit any college transcripts to provide proof of exemption from TSI ✓ Email all information at the same time, before the deadline date and when TCC receives the documents, the program coordinator will be in contact regarding next steps
