  2. Introduction/History • Labrador Retrievers were originally bred for water work. This includes fetching fishing nets and pulling boats. • Labradors originated in Newfoundland, Canada. They were not originally known as Labradors. • Labradors were originally known as St. John's Newfoundland. • The first yellow lab, Ben Hyde, was born in 1899 from two black parents. Every yellow lab today was descended from him. • An English Earl saw these dogs while on vacation and imported some.

  3. Types/Breeds • Labrador Retrievers can be found in yellow, brown, or black. • There are two types of Labradors: the English Labrador and the American Labrador. • Some Labradors have some markings such as site patches on their body, but most are a solid color.

  4. Health • Labrador Retrievers typically live for up to 10-12 years. • Some health conditions that afflict Labradors include patellar luxation, canine hip dysplasia (CHD), and osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), which is canine elbow and shoulder dysplasia.

  5. Nutrition • Labrador Retrievers should have a balanced diet consisting of the 6 essential nutrients: water, protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. • When feeding young Labrador Retrievers, make sure to give it food consisting of 25-30% protein. • When feeding adults, give them varied amounts of food depending on how active the dog is.

  6. Costs • On average, Labrador Retrievers cost anywhere from $700-$1200. • For unregistered dogs, you must register them and get a license for them. Prices vary by location. • Taking your dog to veterinarian regularly will result in a fee starting at $45. • Toys and other equipment will also add to the cost. • You can look for breeders near you to find a suitable dog.

  7. Care and Training • Labrador Retrievers require a lot of outdoor exercises, as they are extremely active dogs. • Labrador Retrievers are known for their low maintenance, waterproof coat, but it still requires regular grooming.
