  4. INTRODUCE • Manage up yourself to the patient • Make the patient confident in your skills and the hospitals, physicians, clinic etc. � Hello Mr. Jones, my name is Sara. I am your nurse tonight. I just talked with John about how your day was. John and I have worked on this unit together for many years. He really does a great job with patients. He told me your day went well except for some pain.

  5. DURATION • How long will something take, physical assessment, test, results etc. � Mr. Jones I need to spend the next 10 minutes asking you some questions and doing my shift assessment on your status. � Mr. Jones I will be performing an EKG which will take about 15 minutes.

  6. Explanation • How can you help patients or family members understand what they should expect? � Mr. Jones when I perform this EKG on you I will be placing these electrodes on your chest so that they can read the rhythm of your heart. All you need to do is lay still this will not hurt. Once I am finished I will remove the sticky pads and let the doctor know that the test is complete. They will then read the test and let you know the findings. Do you have any questions.
