  1. P16411 Pulsed Corona Water Purification Final Gate Review Aaron Weidenaar, Julian Heckbert, Brian Nally, Travis Cunningham

  2. Agenda Outcomes ● Project Status ● Test Results ● Deliverables ● Requirements ● Lessons Learned ● Meeting Notes ●

  3. Project Status System is able to reliably generate corona underwater via ● hybrid discharge in continuous flow Test data was obtained showing effectiveness in batch ● testing, testing with continuous treatment was not able to show effectiveness with Methylene Blue Final design is interchangeable and capable of variable ● flow rates Test data comparing effectiveness with power ● consumption was not generated

  4. Test Results E. Coli Testing 2 log reduction in e. Coli colonies after 6sec/ml ● 99% kill rate ○ No effect at 1.5sec/ml or 3sec/ml ● Need to study this more ○ Methylene Blue Testing Qualitative test for presence of hydroxyl ● Effective in standard hybrid discharge ● ~1-3sec/ml to bleach indicator ○ Ineffective in hybrid discharge ● Ozone competes with hydroxyl to re-color indicator ○ Can tell whether ozone or hydroxyl dominates the reaction ○

  5. MSD II vs. MSD I (Schedule) Team was able to complete construction and design goals ● in timely manner Ordering water testing materials took significantly ● longer than expected Safety meeting and changes led to unexpected delays ● Due to delays, some testing was not completed ● (continuous flow pathogen treatment)

  6. Deliverables Final documents, including this presentation, have been ● uploaded to the EDGE website (link below) Other documentation specific to power supply ● (winners) construction and design will be transferred via flash drive http://edge.rit.edu/edge/P16411/public/Home

  7. Requirements - Most requirements were met - Device works as expected - Kills bacteria - Target treatment rate not met - Power specific performance not found - Biological results were promising - Need further study - Water softening effects - Only in certain circumstances - Need further study

  8. Lessons Learned Keeping all members of the design process actively ● engaged throughout entire process is key Water purity testing is difficult and expensive ● Water treatment electrochemistry is basically magic ● Sealing holes drilled in pipes is difficult ● People are very interested in water purification (ARM ● Contest)
