Session One: Establish Relationships and Identify a Collaborative Focus Sherry Freeman
In this session... 1. Establishing relationships. 2. Ensuring equity. 3. Identifying “problems of practice.” 4. Looking for synergies in our work.
Establishing Relationships Since researchers and practitioners come from different types of institutions, a “discovery” phase is helpful.
Establishing Relationships Turn and talk. 1. What is your current role? 2. What are current concerns at your institution? 3. What motivates you to invest your time and energy in partnership work? Share out.
Ensuring Equity + What do we mean by equity in research-practice partnerships? Equity in RPPs means that all partners have shared interest and equal voice in the purpose, conduct, and outcomes of a study. Because partners often come from different institutions with distinct vocabulary, communication structures, and work practices, special attention is needed to ensure that all partners experience the projects as equitable. R+P Collaboratory
Ensuring Equity Quick write: How can we create collaborative partnerships that are truly equitable? ● How do we promote collaborative decision making and guard against power imbalances? ● What strategies might be used to understand and leverage the diversity of skills, knowledge, and expertise that stakeholders bring to the table? ● What norms of interaction might support equitable participation? Share out.
Useful Resource
Identifying a Joint Focus of Work Turn and talk. What “problem of practice” are you most interested in addressing? Write it down.
Identifying a Joint Focus of Work Share out. Where are there synergies around shared problems of practice?
What’s Next? ● Lunch - “Birds of a feather flock together!” ● Session 2 -- Going from problems of practice ---> proposed solutions.
