COPUOS United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space UN permanent Committee. • Set up by the General Assembly of the UN in 1959. • A unique platform for world-wide space cooperation. • 92 member States plus about 40 Associations and Observers. • (Singapore and Ruanda are currently candidates)
COPUOS United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space 2 Subsidiary Bodies: the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee, and • the Legal Subcommittee, both established in 1961. Reports to the Fourth Committee of the General Assembly, which • adopts an annual resolution on international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space.
COPUOS United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space The Committee and its subcommittees rely on the principle of • consensus. COPUOS suggest recommendations to the United Nations General • Assembly and publish yearly reports providing detailed information on their activities. The Committee was instrumental in the creation of the five treaties and • five principles of outer space.

Mock Exercise Simulate a COPUOS session debating about the establishment of an • open and global space-based UN climate observing satellite system. Teams of 3 students, playing as: Head, Deputy and Technical Expert. • Plus 1 team will work as Chair of the committee. Main goal: came to an agreement (any type), learning how • international cooperation in space works*. Secret goals: different for each team. • *And have fun
