O live mythology According to ancient Greek myth, Zeus announced a competition in which the gods were asked to invent a beneficial gift for the people. The winning god would receive a city in his or her namesake. Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and Poseidon, the god of the sea, competed against one another. Poseidon struck his trident and out of the rocks a miraculous horse was born - whoever sat on it would win in any battle. Athena reached down and touched the earth, and in that spot grew an olive tree, whose shade would provide shelter from the brightest sunlight, whose groves would keep one warm at night, whose fruit would satisfy hunger, and whose oil would extend life. The citizens of the city voted the olive as the more beneficial gift and thus Athena gave her namesake to Athens. Ancient coins (tetra drachmae) were decorated with the symbol of Athens, an owl next to an olive oil vase braided with olive branches. The sacred groves at Olympus consisted of olive trees, and olive branches were presented to the victors of sporting competitions. The olive branch was, and still is, a symbol of peace, tranquillity, happiness, and life.
