• In 1984 Town council showed an interest in establishing a nordic ski facility and offered Monora • 24th year of operation with almost 1,000 24th f ti ith l t 1 000 members • Financially self-sustaining and Fi i ll lf t i i d unsubsidized • Hundreds of thousands of member dollars Hundreds of thousands of member dollars and volunteer hours to provide Mono with a cross country ski facility and enviable a cross country ski facility and enviable year-round trail system
A thriving community asset g y • About 1,000 Mono residents hike, dog walk, cycle, orienteer, engage in martial arts & running in the summer on the trails • • 900 elementary school students and 150 secondary school students cross 900 elementary school students and 150 secondary school students cross country ski through partnership programs with the Upper Grand and Peel School Boards. • 3 schools, 1 university and 7 elementary schools train at Monora y y • ODSS and Mayfield have won close to 50% of the Ontario Secondary School championships in the past 28 years. • Elementary School program with 60 class/year • Each year, over 60 children participate in an Optimist Club run Jack Rabbit cross-country ski program which introduces children from age 5 to 14 to XC skiing • 14 14 national level skiers have trained on these trails. In the mid 80's 4 ti l l l ki h t i d th t il I th id 80' 4 students from ODSS were on the national team with 3 of them participating in the 88 Olympics • Currently there are 4 members trying for a spot on the 2010 Olympic team Currently there are 4 members trying for a spot on the 2010 Olympic team and 2 national level master skiers.

Valuing the Town of Mono lands at Monora Park P k • Direct use value: – Extractive use: the aggregate extracted from the pit; versus – Non-extractive use value: Recreation, sport, health and wellness, educational value, tourism and local economic activity by skiers and summer users of the trail system. • • Indirect use value: Indirect use value: – Environmental benefits of the forest stand and the local ecosystem it is part of in terms of less travel to recreation (less transport related GHG), carbon storage by trees, watershed attenuation etc. – Increased property values associated with the local amenity of the trail system • 3 non-use values: – Option value is the current value of potential future direct and indirect uses of the trails such as the health and well being of youths or the training of the next t il h th h lth d ll b i f th th t i i f th t generation of Olympians. Loss of this value is an opportunity cost; – Bequest value is the value the land will have to future generations of Mono residents; and – Existence value is the value to humans of an ecosystem irrespective of whether it is used or not
