November 7, 2011 Justin R. Wickizer Smith Freed & Eberhard P.C. 111 SW 5 th Ave. Suite 4300 Portland, Or. 97204 Justin, Thank you for the opportunity to provide some ideas for the animated videos you are considering to use on your website. Besides the White-Board and Stop Motion animation techniques, I have found several different options for animation, with a wide range of costs and complexity. Following are descriptions of the animation technique, related cost parameters and links to samples. One item that has come up during research is the use of Lego s as the Stop Motion medium, and the legality of using them in a “for Profit” production. This is something your team might want to research prior to production. We may be okay, if we never refer to, or show the Lego logo, and only refer to the medium as Lego Bricks. There are other medium options if you still wish to consider something similar to the Lego approach. As we proceed, I think you should consider continuity of the productions as they will appear on your website. Also, if future productions are under consideration we should plan to use a technique that is appropriate both creatively and financially for future use. If there are future productions, we would also consider creating characters and scenarios that can be reused and help provide an additional “brand” for the firm. www.marcbowenproductions.com PO Box 9163 Portland, Oregon 97207 ph. 503.295.3641 c. 503.780.0509
Please understand that all of these estimates are our “best guess” at what the projects will cost based on what we know now. As ideas develop and evolve, so will the costs. If there are multiple productions produced simultaneously, we would be able to economize on some time and materials. Animation Ideas for Smith Freed & Eberhard Video Productions I am basing the following creative ideas and animation estimates on 60-second videos. We will adjust the budget as length varies. Our plan here is to develop entertaining characters and situations for visual storytelling, besides the obvious – animation. With each estimated quote, we include: 1) Creating characters specifically for the client. 2) Developing a working script. 3) Producing the animation (in whatever manner) 4) Conforming the final animation to web-friendly files whether it be for website, or Youtube, etc. Developing the script obviously comes first, and then if dictated by the script we design and develop unique characters. After script approvals we record the audio for time and effects, this will provide the timing needed for the animation. Requested Options 1. Cartoon drawing captured via video – White Board or similar Much pre-planning involved for the layout. Video captures artist drawing. Uses large board and time-lapse and editing used to sync to narration and finish. We would need large marker erasable easel in well-lit area and one or two days of shooting. Budget: $25-$32,500 depending on complexity. Variation: There is an added feature we could do with this and that would be as you see in the link, but then at times, the imagery or characters could animate on their own after drawn on the board. Then the hand could come in again and draw something new, etc. This would be a combination of both the static drawing and animation, depending on what was required to support the script/narration. Much pre-planning involved in this also. Additional production time needed in Post to combine the two. Budget: $40-$47,000 depending on complexity and whether lip-sync is utilized in the animation portion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6XAPnuFjJc&feature=youtube_gdata
2. Stop Motion Animation There is a wide range of style, quality and experience available for Stop Motion Animation. The lower part of the range provided is for production from a capable, and creative team. Their work in stop animation is limited but they have the expertise to do what you have described. I have provided samples of their work here. The upper range would be what we could expect if we worked with one of the larger animation houses here in Portland. This concept and medium requires considerable time in pre-production planning and design. The time needed for the process is also considerable, each moving object needs to be moved then photographed in minute degrees. The time needed to animate will depend on the complexity of the moving images in the scene. Deliverable: 60 second commercial, HD, stop-motion Pre-production: 10 days for script development Production: 20 days Broadcast Quality Professional Animation Budget: $50,000 - $100,000+ http://vimeo.com/10253400 http://vimeo.com/31614078 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbO7zc8SQpc Legomation Amateur Animation Budget: $18,000 - $30,000+ http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=legomation&aq=1 See video provided “Lego Lawyer” Animation Options 3. CGI/computer animation. Little more work involved than 2D, since we first create or design the characters as 2D, then create views to be scanned into the computer for reference. The characters body is then modeled, and rigged for animation movement, given a skin texture, create the stages that they will exist in, then finally the animation and render. Budget: $40-$52,000 depending on the complexity and whether lip-sync is utilized. http://www.wallyhood.com/human-beans-movies-movies1/
4. 2D/Hand-drawn animation. Again, design the characters, and then go right into animation referring to the storyboard. We would be utilizing a digital 2D software program to finish the animation. Drawings would be drawn the traditional way, then scanned into the software and colored, composited and rendered. Budget: $34-$40,000 depending on the complexity and whether lip-sync is utilized. http://www.wallyhood.com/got-a-riddle-movies- movies1/http://www.wallyhood.com/nike-movies-movies2/ 5. Flash animation. Character design, then create the characters as vector imagery, then animate in Flash software. Budget: $28-$34,000 depending on complexity and whether lip-sync is utilized. http://www.netvendor.net/
