Recent Work (cont’d) • Meetings with Native community • Collaboration with Seattle Indian Health Board, United Indians of All Tribes • Upcoming Washington State Tribal Sovereignty curriculum training
Current Needs • Increase in numbers of Native American students accessing core instruction • Focus on disaggregated student achievement data for Native American students • Establish a system of positive social behavioral supports and interventions for Native American students • Increase collaboration with Native community
Shift in Focus • From a “wait to fail” model to a prevention plan • From “autopsies” to a progress monitoring and targeted approach to academic growth • From a school building response per pupil to a district level response to low academic achievement of Native students
Plan for 2011-2012 • Intervention specialist hired to serve principals and teachers • Collaboration with principals of schools with higher Native populations • Review data and create plan for Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions • Support progress monitoring of Native students • Build capacity of schools to effectively educate Native students
