Our Pupil Premium Vision • We must do everything in our power to ensure that our disadvantaged students leave with qualifications and skills allowing them to access the next stage of their education • What is your school’s vision for disadvantaged students in your school? • Do all of your staff and Governors know this vision and hear it every day?
Our Strategies to Raise Pupil Premium Achievement
The Theory http://educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk/toolkit/toolkit-a-z/
How We Operate • We ensure that those who are disadvantaged are not highlighted as having differences to their peers • Our philosophy as a school is that our targeting of students is integrated within the whole school context • Many students are unaware of their status as disadvantaged students due to their inclusivity within a range of students that are targeted for intervention based on their ability, not their financial status
Dedicated SLT Position- Tom Sparks Oversee & develop school QA systems incl: • SLT- Middle Leader accountability systems • Department Reviews and Standards • Standards Audits/Learning Walks • Work sampling Stronger Management Systems: • Venn – all Venn structures/systems • Oversight of whole school RAPs and RMGs (RAP Management Groups) systems • ISV related work • Performance table implications and action required • Raising Achievement budget • Oversee Intervention Teams and programmes/budget • Researching and establishing innovation/best practice to further raise and ensure sustained high achievement at KS4 • Coaching colleagues in delivering best practice, and associated exam outcomes, at Key Stage 4 • Linked to narrowing the gap, ensure a high profile for outcomes for vulnerable groups incl PP within the school, working with stakeholders to identify best practice, any underachievement and to ensure focused and effective intervention
Pupil Premium at Goffs • Significant focus in recent years – conscious effort from leadership • Key focus on narrowing the gaps • Tom leads a dedicated PP team focused on IMPACT – can we justify our expenditure – “so what?” culture • Team meets fortnightly and includes the SENCO, Associate Assistant Principal for KS3, the Head of Psychology and the Exams Officer
Setting up a Team Ideally: • led by your Raising Standards Leader • Ideally SLT member so can access information about budget/staffing levels etc • Close cross-over with general raising achievement strategies • SENCO on-board • Invest in the team by having a timetabled fortnightly meeting Can it be used as leadership opportunities for your staff?
Identify the Students • Check the DfE website to ensure you have the right students identified NB: This is updated on 31 st March as funding runs through financial year • How are you communicating this to the staff? • Could all teachers confidently identify their PP students? • Think about Year 6 Summer School funding
Raise the Profile – Cultural Shift • “War Room” in Staff Room – do all staff know who your Pupil Premium students are? • Integrated into school lesson plan pro forma • Continuous messages about Pupil Premium • Consistent agenda item at SLT/HoD link meetings • Consistent agenda item at Raising Achievement meetings • Fully integrated into our data tracking systems • Communication with parents
Pupil Premium Raising Achievement Meetings • Raising Achievement Meetings – fortnightly with HoD Maths/HoD English/Year 11 DoL/SLT: What more can we do? Are we throwing the kitchen sink at them? No excuse culture • Can be easily adapted to Primary Schools for KS2 SATS
Raising Achievement Strategies • Parental meetings • Governors meetings • Beyond Study Leave • Systematic planning of revision sessions and intervention based on tracking • Raising Achievement evenings
1-2-1 Strategies • Peer Mentoring: - use of Sixth Form - Year 6 students - university students - Year 7 students working in feeder primaries • Small group work teaching • Form Time sessions – identify small groups • Effective/focused use of TAs
Targeted Mentoring – Success Guarantors • Selected students assigned a mentor on SLT: – Competition amongst SLT – Meet with parents – Meet with student once a fortnight – Track progress against targets, not A*-C (progress is key) • This has been so successful that it is being rolled out across the school at all Key Stages
Raising Aspirations • College trips • Taster days at Sixth Form • Enrichment activities – Young Enterprise etc • University taster days • Careers day(s) • Connexions interviews
Youth Workers • We have 2 Youth Workers who work with our most vulnerable students • Their relationship with students is completely different to a teacher/student relationship • Play a massive part in the school
External Agencies • We have developed a strong working relationship with Pet Xi • External agency who will come in and do targeted booster classes for 1 week • Excellent for demonstrating progress and impact of Pupil Premium Money • bpinner@pet-xi.co.uk
What is Your S chool’s Tracking System? • Is it set up for Pupil Premium? • Does it, on a half termly basis, show you the gap between Pupil Premium and non Pupil Premium students? • Is the data for CWG and Predictions reliable? How do you know? • Does it show you the gaps?
