My Experience in Social Care
Background… • Employed as a personal assistant in 2007, whilst at college studying A-levels and then university studying for a bachelor’s degree in history • Worked with two adult service users, providing 24 hour care. One was at university and the other was a qualified social worker. • Made redundant in 2013. • Completed a 3 month programme in administration (The Prospect Programme). • October 2013 became a GP receptionist. • Moved to the South West in 2015 and returned to social care. • Worked in step down/extra care 2015-present • Started TNA foundation degree at UWE April 2017 – April 2019
Why did I apply for TNA over TAP? • External Placement • Medication trained • Registered with the NMC • TNA foundation degree was new and exciting • Trained to work in a variety of care settings
Opportunities… • Pathway to nursing • Placement in a variety of care settings • Learning many new skills • Professional development • Observe procedures and surgeries • Learn management and leadership skills • Once qualified take on own case load • To be an ambassador for the programme
My TNA Experience in Social Care… • Work in step down / extra care • Have a clinical placement in a nursing home • Journey different to university peers who have a full time clinical placement • Able to link theory to practice • Often had to travel to other teams to obtain clinical skills • Able to step up and lead a shift when shift leader/ nurse busy or on break • Mentored new staff and supported colleagues with tasks • Completed extra-curricular work to help with learning • Developed professionally and academically • Now able to be more proactive with work and university tasks
Negatives… • Minority of TNAs in social care so could mean less support from those this in area • Role in social care may not be completely understood by those in critical or acute care settings • May have to travel to other teams to be signed off for skills
Positives… • Make new friends • Bring new skills back to practice area • Work within the multidisciplinary team • Further understand and attend social care assessments • Medication Administration – pharmacology module • Administer injections – S/C and IM • Increased knowledge in wound care, catheter/continence care and nutrition • Become a role model for your organisation or university cohort (e.g. student rep) • Mentor guidance • Hands on learning
Placement Experiences… Clinical Placement – Nursing Home Routine assessments, medication, monitoring - health, nutrition, wound care and continence / catheter care. Develop a professional relationship with patient and their families. Non Clinical Placement – Step Down/Extra Care Rehabilitating service users in the facility to return home or be rehomed (Step Down). Assisting with medication administration. Acting as an advocate. Assisting with and Encouraging a healthy and independent lifestyle. Some personal care. Acute Care Placement – Acute Stroke Unit, Day surgery, Spinal/Neurological Ward Task and routine based care, personal care, continence and pressure care. Shadowing the nurse with clinical skills.
