  3. Grades • Grading Meeting: October 30th at 6PM, location TBD. • Grades are released six weeks after exams. • Grading policies can be found on our website.

  4. Career Advisors • Career Advisor assignments were sent on Monday, September 24th via email. • Please schedule an appointment with advisor before December 1 st to discuss specialty of interest. • Contact medcareeradvising@hofstra.edu or your Career Advisor with any questions. • Resources: • Careers in Medicine (CIM) • Career Advisors • Departmental Advisors

  5. Preparing for MS4 Year • The Office of Career Advising is here to guide you and help prepare you for residency applications. • We know it seems early, but better to be proactive! There are some things that you can do now that will make MS4 year easier.

  6. Curriculum Vitaes (CVs) • Updated CVs are needed for away rotations, nominations for honors and residency applications. The school will ask for an updated CV from everyone in January. • You will need an updated CV to apply to away rotations. • We suggest you update often and include medical school, graduate school and college accomplishments. • Click here for samples and suggested formats. – Please note these will be reformatted in ERAS when applying for residency.

  7. Letters of Recommendation (LOR) • Start to think about potential letter writers. • We recommend you request LORs in the spring of third year. • Who should you ask for a LOR? – Third year attending in your area of interest – Fourth year attending from AI in your area of interest – Research PI or mentor – Continuity preceptor – Someone who knows you well

LORs Continued • Frame the question to obtain a positive letter. • “Do you think you could write me a strong letter?” • To consider: – Consider the seniority of your letter writers. • Suggest a junior attending co-sign a letter with a senior attending. – Research specifics needed for specialty of interest. • For example, Emergency Medicine has a specific letter and format. – The school cannot review letters on ERAS. • Resources: Tip sheet for letter writers, Career Advisors

  9. Counseling on Aways & Electives • Discuss interest in electives & aways rotations during individual meetings with Career Advisors. • Curriculum Support and Career Advisors will be available during individual Fourth Year Scheduling meetings to counsel you on electives. • Resources: Career Advisors, 2018-19 MS4 Course Catalog

Honors & Societies • Below are a few honors and awards that you may be eligible for over the next two years: – Gold Humanism Honor Society • This is a peer nominated, national honor society, finalized by a committee. • A survey to nominate your class members will be distributed in the spring. Candidates will be announcement in late spring. – Alpha Omega Alpha • This is a national honor society based on academic performance, finalized by a committee. • Candidates will be announced late spring. – Graduation with Distinction in Research • This is a School of Medicine honor, conferred at graduation. • Apply early if you are interested so this can be included on residency applications. – Graduation and Departmental Awards • This subset of awards are conferred at graduation.

Resource: Mental and Physical Health Hofstra Resources: Both of the following are located at the Wellness and Campus Living Center (250 Hofstra University) on this side (north) of campus: Health & Wellness Center Student Health Services offers various on-site services, such as urgent care, immunizations, women’s health, lab testing, HIV screening and referrals. Students can schedule an appointment using the Hofstra portal or calling (516) 463-6745. Student Counseling Center The Student Counseling Center is located on this side of campus, near Hofstra USA and is a resource for mental health, illness and wellness. The Counseling Center offers one on one sessions as well as a variety of support group meetings. Medical school students receive one free intake appointment, plus three free counseling sessions with a psychologist. Effective September, appointments after the intake are free to all full-time students! Students can schedule an appointment by calling (516) 463-6745. The Office of Student Affairs can schedule appointments on your behalf under extenuating circumstances and with your permission.

Resource: Mental and Physical Health Northwell Resources: Physician Resource Network (PRN) Physician Resource Network is a service for healthcare providers in need of care from a psychologist, psychiatrist, or external referral. Dr. Jeffrey Selzer offers confidential referrals and assessment for all medical school students. Students can reach Dr. Selzer by emailing jselzer@northwell.edu or calling 866-454-3280. Behavioral Health College Partnership BHCP (College Program) provides state-of-the-art evaluation and evidence-based treatment for psychiatric crises and their aftermath, as well as diverse challenges ranging from adjustment problems to major disorders emerging during the transition to university life. Students can contact Dr. Braider (lbraider@northwell.edu or 718-740-8049) or Dr. Steinhauer (msteinhauer@northwell.edu or 718-470-8493) for more information. Employee Health Services (EHS) Employee Health Services manages medical student health records for the duration of medical school and even into residency for some! All immunizations, medical records and lab results are housed at EHS. EHS can be contacted by reaching out to the Office of Student Affairs.
