MOULD EXPERIMENT
PURPOSE/GOAL To determine which of these controlled vegetables, tomato, carrot, spinach, potato and cabbage, grows the most mould in the same location.
VARIABLES The five different types of vegetables are tomato, potato, carrot, cabbage and spinach. All are in the same location and are controlled.
CONTROLLING THE EXPERIMENT I have controlled my experiment by using the same containers and placing them in the same location.
HYPOTHESIS If the tomato holds the most mould of all the vegetables then it will grow most mould because mould needs moisture to grow.
MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT Camera 5 containers 5 bags Half a tomato Half a potato Piece of cabbage Piece of carrot Spinach A knife
PROCEDURE Get vegetables. Slice potato in half. Slice tomato in half. Rip piece of cabbage. Slice part of carrot Lay vegetables in containers barely touching it. Fill containers in ziplock bag. Leave it and observe it growing mould.
DAY 1 0% MOULD ON THE SPINACH 0% MOULD ON CARROT.
0% MOULD ON TOMATO. 0% MOULD ON POTATO.
0% mould growth on cabbage.
DAY 4 QUITE BLURRY. SPINACH DEHYDRATED A MOIST IN BAG. 0% MOULD GROWTH. BIT.
MOIST IN BAG. THE MOIST EVAPORATES BUT IT CAN’T MOIST IN BAG. THE MOIST EVAPORATES BUT IT CAN’T GET OUT SO THE MOIST STAYS THERE. 10% MOULD GET OUT SO THE MOIST STAYS THERE. 5% MOULD GROWTH ON POTATO. GROWTH ON TOMATO.
6% of mould growing on the sides.
DAY 8 MOIST INSIDE BECAUSE OF TEMPERATURE MOIST INSIDE. SPINACH DEHYDRATED. DIFFERENCE AND THE MOIST EVAPORATES BUT IT CAN’T GET OUT SO THE MOIST STAYS THERE. 0% MOULD GROWING ON CARROT.
MOIST BECAUSE OF TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE.. VERY HARD TO SEE. LETTING OUT JUICE AND 50% 30% MOULD GROWING ON POTATO. MOULD GROWING.
Moist inside because of temperature difference. 10% of mould growing.
DAY 12 MOIST BECAUSE OF TEMPERATURE SPINACH DEHYDRATED. DIFFERENCE. 1% OF MOULD GROWING ON CARROT.
VERY MOIST. HARD TO SEE. 60% MOULD MOIST INSIDE BECAUSE OF TEMPERATURE GROWING ON TOMATO. DIFFERENCE. 40% OF MOULD GROWING.
A bit moist inside because of temperature difference. 15% mould growing.
CONCLUSION In conclusion, the tomato grew the most mould and the carrot grew the least mould. My hypothesis was correct. The tomato should’ve grown mould fast because it held the most moisture. The cabbage and carrot should’ve grown the least mould because they were the driest vegetable.
NEW UNDERSTANDINGS AND QUESTIONS I found out that mould needs warmth, moist, light, oxygen and food sources to grow mould. Dry and cold areas are not good places to grow mould. Tomatoes and potatoes are good food sources for mould to grow. My questions were why do mould need nutrient to grow? Why do mould need warmth, moist, light and oxygen to grow?
