Migration A thematic process
Four major challenges Sweden’s three major cities – Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö - have identified four major societal trends: • Urbanization, migration and segregation • Transformation of economy • Social polarization and cohesion • Climate change
Migration as a multi-directional and continuously ongoing process We address migration as a ‘normal state’, where both international and internal migration is regarded as an inevitable part of ongoing processes of globalization, urbanization and transformed relationships between the rural and urban.
So far – a Swedish collaboration Starting point in March 2017, with a full day seminar arranged by Mistra Urban Futures Skåne platform (SKLIP). Mistra Urban Futures Gothenburg platform (GOLIP) has a close collaboration with Center of Global migration (CGM) – a center at Gothenburg University which gathers research about migration within several disciplines. GOLIP also support Organising Integration - a multidisciplinary research program on labour market integration.
Panel discussion at ICLEI’s Annual Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaption May 2017, Bonn “To plan for reception of asylum seekers and refugees: Comparative perspectives” - Officials from Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö - Representatives from academia and civil society
Workshop on Migration and Sustainable Urban Development May 2017, Gothenburg To promote dialogue and collaboration around the strategic questions, practical solutions and political dilemmas that arise as a consequence of migration. What knowledge gaps exists? How can Mistra Urban Futures support a process that generates useful knowledge for both research and practice?
Three central themes • Changed perspectives and approaches in governance and planning • Migration in an urban-rural context • Spatial transformation as a result of migration
Panel discussion at the political week in Almedalen July 2017, Visby “Migration as an ongoing state - How do cities and communities manage and plan for this ?” In 2015, Sweden received a large number of refugees and the society mobilized on a broad front. - How do we use these experiences in our long- term work? - What can we learn from research on migration in a broader perspective?
In progress: A Mistra Urban Futures network Based on the workshop in May and in collaboration with Centre on Global Migration a network is under development. A forum for researchers, practitioners and other actors to gather around complex issues linked to Migration and Sustainable Urban Development.
In progress: ”The uneven geography of migration” A project idea on spatial integration of newly arrived migrants is being discussed with researchers from Chalmers University of Technology. Starting point of the new Swedish settlement act: designated municipalities should be able to arrange accommodation for newly arrived migrants who have been granted a residence permit. Two steps: one pre-study with focus on two small municipalities with decreasing population, a second study with focus on Gothenburg. Basis for a larger research application.
