OPL Amendment: Where do we stand today? The OPL declared article number 73 in the law of pharmacy practice in Lebanon in 1994 and being amended and reinforced in 2010. This amendment targets to improve the quality of pharmacy practice in the field of marketing and promotions “only Pharmacists” are allowed to work in pharmaceutical companies. Strict application of this article will enhance the opportunity for pharmacists to work in this field. The evolving role of Med Reps will encourage the freshly graduated pharmacists to work in this field.
Evolving Duties of a Pharmacist in the pharmaceutical companies Provide information in a transparent, accurate and timely way to enable HCP to take advantage of what is achieved in medical science. Support continuing medical education of healthcare professionals to disseminate the medical evidence characterising Pharmaceutical Products. Run Multicenter global and local clinical trials. Process PharmacoVigilance reports, from physicians, community &/or hospital Pharmacists. Abide by the different code of ethics, whichever is more stringent.
Safety and Pharmacovigilance Pharmacovigilance (PV) is defined as the science and activities relating to the detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any other Drug-Related Problem. At the end of 2010, 134 countries were part of the WHO PV Program. The aim of PV is to enhance patient care and patient safety in relation to the use of medicines; and to support public health programs by providing reliable, balanced information for the effective assessment of the risk- benefit profile of medicines. Ethical and Compliance The marketing of pharmaceutical products should be highly regulated to comply with good marketing practices by adhering to applicable laws, regulations, industry codes and internal processes and standards established by the health authorities and pharmaceutical companies. Codes regarding good marketing practices include: IFPMA*, PhRMA* *IFPMA: International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations *PhRMA: Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America
Future Insights Increased number of pharmacists joining the pharmaceutical companies. The OPL projects the percentage to increase from 43% to 50% within the few coming years.
