Weston-super-Mare – setting the scene 1. Long History – ‘change over time’ Seaside tourist destination for 200 years Decline with cheaper foreign holidays and demise of factory "works holidays” 2. Competition to attract visitors Fierce competition to attract businesses and visitors. Devon and Dorset within 50 miles and Bath (30 miles) and Bristol (15 miles) Bristol – the 4 th most visited city in England for overnight stays 3. Attracting people to the ENTE In the last 40 years overnight visitors have reduced – only 1 in 4 visitors to the resort now stay overnight. 1 in 4 visitors are from the Midlands with majority either over 60 or families with young children.
Weston-super-Mare – setting the scene The town centre is just 1.274² miles and home to only 3% of the North Somerset population. In 2014 it accounted for • 1 in 4 Total Crimes • 1 in 4 Public Disorder • 1 in 4 Anti-Social-Behaviour calls • 1 in 3 Violent Crimes It is subject to sudden & significant peaks in demand. Summer months see a steep rise in crime and ASB levels Alcohol aggravated crime and disorder is prevalent. Two thirds of town centre assaults happen in the ENTE (Evening and Night Time Economy - Friday & Saturday 8pm – 3am) A small number of hotspot locations linked to licensed premises that experience a disproportionate amount of crime and disorder
Our Plan to Improve the Evening & Night Time Economy In 2014 Weston-super-Mare became a Home Office Local Alcohol Action Area A vision for what we were aspiring to achieve was generated by the partner agencies: To provide a safe, enjoyable and friendly ENTE for all to enjoy whilst promoting good trade and tourism and reducing demand on police and clinical services. A multi-agency action plan was drawn up to be managed by a new ENTE steering group with 4 key objectives o More Responsible Licensed Premises o To improve perception of the ENTE o To improve ENTE safety and reduce vulnerability o To improve diversity of the ENTE
