We Are Data Data growth is everywhere and this trend won’t stop. Data is produced by people every time they perform an action in the world online or offline. (Online and offline is a business perspective, but for people it is all the same.) When the action is performed, the data goes somewhere else. And “somewhere else” is a place that belongs to many other agents in the data ecosystem. But not to the people who create that information. Even though that information is about them.
Problem: Wrong Value Distribution Consumers Data Brokers Data Buyers 1) Each person is generating data. We would define this as a digital footprint. (Such as the trail of data you create while using the Internet). This footprint could be active (people voluntarily submit information) or passive (people leave data unintentionally or without full awareness or control). People give thier data for free, many times with no explicit consent. 2) Data brokers, tech companies, advertisers (aka data companies) capture this data (your data!) and create products and services that feed the Data market. Data companies profit from this. The value of the digital display advertising market based on data will reach $120B USD globally during 2019. All of this works without explicit consent or even creating workarounds when the model doesn’t comply with regulations. 3) Companies buy this data as an input to create personalized advertising and reach people with customized products and services. Companies that are buying this data are not comfortable either: they don't have any guarantee that the data is real and they are also worried about legal compliance. 4) At the end of the cycle, the same user who gives away the data, receives information about many companies that may not interest them. Users are concerned about how companies use their data and also feel annoyed when receiving something they haven’t asked for.
Everyone has the right to own their data We want to change that. We believe that everyone has the right to own their data. You should be able to control how your data is used, by whom, and for what purpose. And you should participate in the benefit it generates. You own your data - businesses can rent it from you!
