TRAINING & EDUCATION World Handicap System 2020: Slope What is Slope? The ratings for the ‘scratch’ and ‘bogey’ golfers (generated by the course rating system) are multiplied by a predetermined factor, giving a Slope value between 55 and 155. How does this work with handicapping? The handicap index will be based on a neutral slope rating of 113. Meaning that during the handicap process we will have to add in and subtract slope at different points.

TRAINING & EDUCATION World Handicap System 2020: Gross Differential Gross Differential is the name for the actual score played to on the day. It is the difference between the adjusted gross (gross - any Stableford adjustment) and the Course Rating (adjusted by any CCA of the day). Gross Differential (GD)= adjusted Gross Score – Course Rating – CCA Gross Differential (GD)= 94 – 73.4 – 0 Gross Differential (GD)= 20.6 However it is not the score posted on the handicap record as this needs to be de-sloped.

TRAINING & EDUCATION World Handicap System 2020: Handicap Differential The Gross Differential needs to be de-sloped based on the neutral Slope rating of 113 in order for it to be included in the handicap record. Handicap Differential (HD) = GD * (113/Slope of course played) Handicap Differential (HD) = 20.6 * (113/125) Handicap Differential (HD) = 20.6 * 0.9 Handicap Differential (HD)= 18.5

TRAINING & EDUCATION World Handicap System 2020: Handicap Calculation - CAP To ensure that a players handicap doesn’t increase too severely, a suppression mechanism is added to the basic calculation. This mechanism comes in two forms: The Low Handicap Index (Anchor Point) This is the lowest Handicap Index achieved by a player within the last 12 months. The CAP A reduction or limit on the increase of a player’s Handicap Index over a rolling 12- month period, measured against the player’s Low Handicap Index within that period of time.
TRAINING & EDUCATION World Handicap System 2020: Handicap Calculation - CAP The Cap has two forms: Soft Cap : a reduction in the rate upward movement of a Handicap Index. When the Handicap Index is more than 3 strokes above the player’s lowest index within the trailing 12 months, the increase is suppressed such that only ½ of the increase (above 3 strokes) is applied.
TRAINING & EDUCATION World Handicap System 2020: Handicap Calculation - CAP Player A has a current handicap index of 14.1 and a Low Index of 12.0, but his most recent best 8 of 20 have given him a Calculated HCP index of 17. Calculating the Cap Soft Cap = ½ x (“Calculated HCP Index” - (Low Index + 3)) Soft Cap = ½ x (17.0 - (12.0 + 3)) Soft Cap = ½ x (17.0 – 15.0) Soft Cap = ½ x 2 Soft Cap = 1 stroke
TRAINING & EDUCATION World Handicap System 2020: Handicap Calculation - CAP Applying the Cap. New Handicap Index = (Low index + 3) + Soft Cap New Handicap Index = (12 + 3) + 1 New Handicap Index = 15 + 1 New Handicap Index = 16
TRAINING & EDUCATION World Handicap System 2020: Handicap Calculation - CAP Hard Cap : a maximum limit on the upward movement of a handicap index In addition, a player’s Handicap Index will be prevented from rising more than 5 strokes above the Low Index in the trailing 12 months. This has the effect that a temporary loss of form does not cause a player’s Handicap Index to move too far from a level which is consistent with their underlying potential.
TRAINING & EDUCATION World Handicap System 2020: Handicap Calculation - CAP Player B has a current handicap index of 14.1 and a Low Index of 12.0, but his most recent best 8 of 20 have given him a Calculated HCP index of 20. Calculating the Cap Soft Cap = ½ x (“Calculated HCP Index” - (Low Index + 3)) Soft Cap = ½ x (20 - ( 12+ 3)) Soft Cap = ½ x (20 -15) Soft Cap = ½ x 5 Soft Cap = 2.5
TRAINING & EDUCATION World Handicap System 2020: Handicap Calculation - CAP Applying the Cap. New Handicap Index = (Low index + 3) + Soft Cap New Handicap Index = (12 + 3) + 2.5 New Handicap Index = 15 + 2.5 New Handicap Index = 17.5 New Handicap Index = 17.0 (Capped) As 17.5 is over 5 strokes from 12 (low index) the New handicap index is capped at 17.0
TRAINING & EDUCATION World Handicap System 2020: ESR Is applied to a handicap differential which is at least 7 strokes better than the player's Handicap Index at the time that round was played. On submission of the above exceptional score, a player's Handicap Index will be reduced by the following amount: Score relative to current HI Extra Adjustment -7, 8 or 9 -1 -10 or more -2 This reduction is in addition to any reduction resulting from the updated 8/20 calculation. The adjustment will apply to that and every future score until the Exceptional Score drops away as one of the last 20.
