  1. Low-cost air quality sensors FAIRMODE technical meeting Madrid, 8 October 2019 European Commission Clean Air

  2. Increased awareness of air quality urgencies Source(s): Various online and print media

  3. AQ sensors: a fast-moving field In addition to the official air quality data and information, the availability and popularity of low ‑ cost AQ sensors has increased over the few past years The current generation of low-cost sensors, delivers measurements of lower data quality than official monitoring Citizen science monitoring campaigns have successfully used low-cost sensors to increase public awareness and public engagement on air quality issues

  4. AQ sensors: a fast-moving field Sensor values depend on technology and their implementation: a huge variety of sensor technologies and prices exist. No simple correction or fitting is possible In certain situations the measurement uncertainty may approach the AQ Directives’ DQO of indicative methods . However, the main message is «validate low-cost sensors, both with field tests and laboratory tests under controlled conditions in order to understand the measurement uncertainties»

  5. EP pilot project on AQ sensors “Integrating smart sensors and modelling for air quality monitoring in cities” • 1M EUR in funding from EP, 3-year duration • JRC performing research on low-cost AQ sensors • Field deployment of sensors in three European cities

  6. EP pilot project on AQ sensors Project objectives • Develop deployment and calibration procedures for air quality sensors • Research ways of integrating lower-cost sensors with conventional air quality monitoring systems • Develop general guidance on the use of lower-cost air quality sensors 14

  7. EP pilot project on AQ sensors Budget allocation for sensors: ~ 200k EUR Too few sensors! Cost ‘Sweet spot’: ~100 good sensor boxes @2K EUR each Lots of sensors, but quality too low! Quality of sensors
