Incubatin ing p projects t to scale le Step 1: Assess how the project builds resilience using resilience principles Step 2: Assess the potential scalability of the project, looking at: i. User appropriateness ii. Sustainability iii. Scalability Step 3: Conduct capacity assessment and gap analysis Step 4: Work with the project according to the jointly agreed gap analysis and action plan #ResilientFuture

GRP Cha RP Challenges The Challenges are a series of competitions hosted by the Global Resilience Partnership to tackle the world’s most intractable problems. Through the Challenges, the Partnership surfaces bold, innovative ideas with real- world impact that may start small, but have the potential to scale up with support from the incubator. GRP has overseen three challenges: the USAID Global Resilience Challenge (Round 1), the Z Zurich Foundation Water Window Challenge (Round 2) and the GRP Innovation Challenge (Round 3). 1,300 $870,000 90,000 ha 7 million Value of financial Areas under People supported Organizations receiving assistance services support innovations by GRP #ResilientFuture

FAI AIL: F First At Attem empt I In Lea earnin ing • Failure for GRP is not viewed negatively or as an opportunity to penalize projects. • Instead, it represents a great opportunity to learn from and improve the project (or aspects of it) and, crucially, to document and share that learning so others can avoid the same mistakes. • This focus on learning has permeated the entire GRP ecosystem. • Creating the space to test innovations, take risks and embrace and learn from failure is important. #ResilientFuture

Les essons f for s scalin ling r res esil ilie ience i innova ovation ions • Models for sustainability need to move beyond business and social approaches, to also address volatility and continued participation of the most poor and vulnerable • Attention to context is needed, understanding that context continuously shifts with increasing scale • There is a need to develop particular leadership skills to be able to work with the complexity of scaling • The active participation of stakeholders is critical to scaling success • The scaling process should be informed by ongoing evidence generation and learning • Funding support needs to be flexible, reliable and long term #ResilientFuture
Rec ecom ommendation ions: l lea earnin ing f from f failu lure • Learn (quickly) from failure • Consider the risks or implications of ignoring failure • Projects must design in a culture of learning from the start and find tools and mechanisms to respond • Work closely with the projects in a structured way • Identify failure thresholds and convey expectations clearly • Consider phasing to allow testing at the right time #ResilientFuture
