LEARNING ANALYTICS
What is learning analytics? “The practice of developing actionable insights through the collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimising learning and the environments in which it occurs.” The University of Adelaide Slide 2
Learning Analytics informs Learning Design Who are my students? • Before Semester What programs/careers are they enrolled in? • Information about previous delivery of this course • What is the course design? • How are my students going? • What are they doing? • During Semester What are they understanding? • Are they having problems in specific areas? • • What did my students do? • What did they learn? After Semester • How does the content align to the program objectives? • Are there any trouble spots in the course design or technology used? • What improvements can be made? • What did the students think? • Re-design aspects of course Teach Course Again • Adapt to a different Course Expand repertoire • The University of Adelaide Slide 3
How can Learning Analytics help you? Reports • Detailed Course Reports • Student Engagement Reports • High Failure Rate (HFR) Reports • Other Ad-Hoc reports on request Tools • LMS Analytics & New Analytics (MyUni) • Student Insights • Using analytics for student communication (New Analytics & OnTask) • Further support with course insights, interpreting data The University of Adelaide Slide 4
Detailed Course Report • Enrolment details : history, status, by gender, by residency • Course history : prior courses, current courses • Units : current load & number of units passed by students • Previous attempts at course • Average mark : course, school & faculty • Grade and mark distribution • Pass rates : by course, school, faculty, gender residency • Comparative to previous iterations of the course The University of Adelaide Slide 5
Student Engagement Report • Analysis of overall student engagement • Engagement vs academic performance • How, when, why students engage • Pre-course engagement • Semester break engagement The University of Adelaide Slide 6
High Fail Rate (HFR) Report • Explore aspects which may be connected to student performance: - course outcomes (total and %) - dropped enrolments - assessments - activity vs final mark - engagement - request counts The University of Adelaide Slide 7
Additional Reports • Learning Analytics can provide ad-hoc and additional reports upon request The University of Adelaide Slide 8
LMS Analytics & New Analytics • Dashboard providing access to data that supports evidence-informed engagement • Views & participations of each course element • LMS Analytics currently available in all courses • New Analytics is a dashboard developed by canvas • Provides insights into student engagement, grades, interactions • Available in all courses now The University of Adelaide Slide 9
Communication Tools: New Analytics & OnTask • Improve academic experience of students through delivery of personalised and actionable feedback within a course • Start with New Analytics: based on one data point – student participation/views of course content • OnTask can be multiple data points but time commitment for training, knowledge of CSV and excel are required. The University of Adelaide Slide 10
Student Insights • Student dashboard providing insights on engagement with course content • Highlights content not yet viewed or participated in • Provides comparison to peers • Piloted in 10 courses in Semester 2, 2019 The University of Adelaide Slide 11
