I HornA, revision 2 => Coded up. ✔ Target: revised: ✔ → → – Vertically expanded fins 20 mm 24 26 mm – Fin width: 10 or 13.4 mm – Cooling tubes : 4 mm OD (was 3 before) – Recoded volume hierarchy & “rounding” – Helium container It was (wrongly!) still made of Beryllium.   3. As usual, encountered bugs.. Always a bit tedious to code the geometry... Volume by volume... But, ✔ getting a bit more proficient at it.. I think.. already too old to tell) Then, every ~10,000 events (Importance weight set to 1.), crash in ✔ Geant4 geometry navigation class, fatal.. The IC and it’s mother volume is nearly // of the Z axis, the presence of these two volumes seems to trigger confusions among which volumes crossings coordinates should be used, for some rare tracks.. G4 bug lists seemed to indicate that this is solved in v4.10.2 ✔ Installed it, minor modification in the LBNEG4Visualiztion class, it ✔ complies and runs..   8. Plan View, One fin + boundary. The true fins are “rounded”, which requires once again volume diviison and/or subtraction. Ease the shape, implemented these cuts as rectangled parallelepiped. Same carved out volume as in the real fins. Nov 17 2016 NuMI Target upgrade, + others 8

Far detector.., ν µ ν mode This is with “Idealistic” Horns, Optimizer run CP_run26_8079 Old target had 20 mm height fins, 3 mm cooling tubes. Beryllium Helium cont. vessel. ..New target, 24 mm height, 4 mm cooling tubes, Titanium He cont. vessel... 40 cm longer !. Nov 17 2016 NuMI Target upgrade, + others 15

  17. Next Steps... To be discussed... Need a bit of guidance. Note: very limited man-power at this stage, as I have to go back to the spectrometer. More such studies, to understands quantitatively the potential loss of performance for each engineering-driven decision. (fin heights, # of wings, ajutment of IC profile.. ) Implement Horn B, revision 2 (awaiting from Nx9 CAD package..) Then, go back to the “Idealistic” version, as said above, qunatify, and, then, “haggle a bit”, to converge towards an actual design. Nov 17 2016 NuMI Target upgrade, + others 17
