Landåstorget seniorsenter Landåstorget seniorsenter is a senior citizens centre operated by the Norwegian Health Association (more below). It is one of three centres in Bergen and offers a variety of courses for older adults. (Computer and Internet, international folkdance, bridge, Spanish, French etc.) Landåstorget Seniorsenter has managed to build a computer-lab with broadband internet access. Norwegian Health Association Norwegian Health Association founded in 1910. Pioneer movement against tuberculosis until its decline in Norway after WW2. Better health and living conditions for the elderly Since the late 1940’s NHA also encountered new challenges within cardiovascular diseases, child and family care and work with and for the elderly. NHA goal is to improve health and living conditions for the elderly. For more than 50 years NHA has been a pioneer in the work for the elderly. NHA started the first senior centre in Scandinavia in 1952. Senior centres A community meeting place where the elderly can come together for: - services and activities that reflect their experiences and skills - respond to their diverse needs and interests, enhance their dignity - support their independence and encourage involvement with the community. Senior centers vary considerably in terms of what they offer, but a typical senior center may have: • Meal and nutrition programs • Information and assistance • Health and fitness programs • Transportation opportunities • Volunteer services • Art programs - activities Senior centres • Offer services (social worker, hairdresser, pedicure etc.) • Information on aging, possibilities and rights for senior citizens • Link participants with recources offered by other agencies • Offer activities within and outside the center Goal • Prevent passivety and social isolation • Maintain and create networking • Strengthen feeling of personal identity • Giving the elderly a feeling of belonging and being needed in the local community

Harald Høivik Born i Bergen, Norway 10-21-1926. After finishing high-school and put behind me my military service I went through a course at the school for officers in the Merchant Marine, and thereafter served as a radio officer at sea in world wide trade. At the ripe age of 40 I had 2 years at the teachers college in Bergen. 10 years as an elementary school teacher and 30 years as a sailor will sum up my jobs until retirement at 6o. I am a qualified Bergen city guide with English and German as languages. To add it up I speak Spanish good enough to get along in Spanish speaking countries and am also familiar with French E-mail: haraldho@gmail.com Brit Utne Manager at Landåstorget Seniorsenter. She oversees the project and is responsible to making the senior citizen centre one of the best, if not THE best place for older adults to develop, thrive and socialize in Bergen. She runs the centre with two employees and has managed to tap into the resource older adults represent, as a large number of volunteers help out.
