“Everybody is a genius! But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is useless.” KS1 SATs 2017 Information for Parents
Welcome The purpose of the evening is to share with you what will be happening in Year 2 with regards to both statutory and teacher assessments. Children will sit tests but these scores are only used to support teachers’ on-going assessment. These assessments will provide information about how your child is progressing compared to children of the same age nationally. This is not a school initiative. It is government led and applies to every state school in England.
Building a picture… of what each child can do through everyday teaching and learning. As well as our on-going work, children will take part in a variety of statutory assessment tasks in the key areas of learning which adds to the picture and supports our own teacher assessments. At the end of the year the children will be identified as working towards, working at or working with greater depth of the expected standard for a Year 2 child.
What tests do children complete? https://youtu.be/M8MjPFWRQs0 The tests include: • 2 reading papers- short text with questions; longer text with separate questions • 2 grammar, punctuation and spelling papers – this is optional this year • 2 maths papers – arithmetic and mathematical reasoning
When? Teachers arrive at judgements by taking into account strengths over a period of time, rather than focusing on just one piece of work. We already know what your child is capable of and how well they are achieving. Towards the end of May they will sit short tests to support these judgements. The children will be in small groups and will be required to work independently.
Do all children sit tests? All children are continuously assessed through rigorous teacher assessment. Children working within the Year 2 curriculum will be required to sit the tests. The tests are not strictly timed and most children are actually unaware that they are taking them as we incorporate them into our normal everyday classroom practice.

Maths Paper 2: Reasoning
SEND There is a small percentage of our children who are currently working below the standard of both the national curriculum tests and the interim teacher assessment frameworks. Many of these pupils have special educational needs and receive targeted support. These children will not sit any formal assessments so judgements will be made through on-going teacher assessment. They will be reported to be working at the foundations of the expected standard.
How will the tests be marked? Although the tests are set externally, they will be marked by teachers within our school. Test scores and teacher assessments will be used to build up a picture of your child’s learning and achievements. Your child will then receive an overall result saying whether they have achieved the required standard in the tests. Parents will receive their child's results in their End of Year Progress Report in July. This information is also passed on to their next teacher.
Teacher Assessment Our teacher assessment is now based on a set of criteria for expected attainment for a Year 2 child. We have an interim framework of standards children must meet. If they meet these standards, they are awarded working at the expected standard. If they do not meet these standards they are awarded working towards the expected standard. If they meet all the standards and exceed and meet all the greater depth standards they are classed as working at a greater depth. See booklets that outline these standards.
Writing • Writing is based on teacher assessment only. • Judgements are made from evidence of writing across the curriculum. • Children are expected to: § Punctuate sentences correctly (cl , . ! ?) with finger spaces § Use noun phrases and powerful adjectives to describe things § Write in the past or present tense § Use or/and/but/when/if/that/because to link sentences § Spell words correctly § Start to join their handwriting
How can you help at home with Writing? Spelling Continue to practise and reinforce weekly spellings and the Year 2 common exception words. Writing Encourage writing at home: stories, information texts, lists etc. Focus on spelling, punctuation and sentence construction and reinforce correct letter formation and joined handwriting.
How can you help at home with Reading? Reading Continue daily reading with your child and when reading talk to them about the plot, characters and setting. Try to ask your child questions where the answer is not always obvious and they sometimes have to deduce the answer. Ask your child if they want to ask any questions about the story or text. Read different types of texts with your child including non- fiction .
How can you help at home with maths ? Ask your child to recall tables facts (x2, x5, x10, x3) Encourage them to add prices together when shopping and work out the change. Practise number skills in problem solving e.g. Dad had 10 sweets, he gave 3 to Mam and 1 to the dog. How many sweets did he have left? Encourage your child to make jottings and draw pictures to help them solve problems. Use different mathematical vocabulary with them such as different ways of saying add: e.g. total, altogether, more than, count on. Count together in different steps such as 10s, 2s, 5s etc. Tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes.
