Glory be to the Father And to the Son And to the Holy Ghost As it was in the beginning, Is now and ever shall be, World without end! Amen, amen
Call to Worship (our ancient writings usher us into this ritual) Why do we worship? Daniel 7:13-14 As I watched in the night visions I saw one like the Son of Man, Coming on the clouds of heaven. And He came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before Him. To the Son of Man was given by the Ancient of Days: Dominion and glory and kingship, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, His kingship is one that will never be destroyed.
The Lord be with you And also with you. Lifu up your hearts We lifu them up to God.
Psalm 19 To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. The heavens tell of the glory of God The sky announces His handiwork Day afuer day they pour out speech Night afuer night they reveal knowledge There is no language, there are no words Where their voice is not heard Their voice goes through all the earth Their words to the end of the world In them He has set a tent for the sun Which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber Like a strong man who runs his way with joy
Its rising is from the end of the heavens Its circuit to the end of them There is nothing hidden from its heat The law of the I AM is perfect, Reviving the soul The testimony of the I AM is sure Making wise the simple The precepts of the I AM are right Rejoicing the heart The commandment of the I AM is pure Enlightening the eyes The fear of the I AM is clean Enduring forever The rules of the I AM are true Righteous altogether
They are more desirable than gold, even much pure gold They are sweeter than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb By them Your is servant warned In keeping them there is great reward. Who can discern His errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant from presumptuous sins as well Let them have no dominion over me! Then I will be blameless and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight I AM, my Rock and my Redeemer.
Invocation (we call on God to create this time of worship by the Holy Spirit) Jesus Paid It All I hear the Savior say, Thy strength indeed is small Child of weakness watch and pray, find in Me thy all in all Jesus paid it all All to him I owe Sin had lefu a crimson stain He washed it white as snow Lord, now indeed I find, Thy power and thine alone Can change a leper’s spots And melt a heart of stone
For nothing good have I Whereby Thy grace to claim I’ll wash my garments white In the blood of Calv-ry’s lamb Jesus paid it all All to him I owe Sin had lefu a crimson stain He washed it white as snow And when before the throne I stand in Him complete Jesus died my soul to save My lips shall still repeat
Jesus Messiah He became sin who knew no sin That we might become his righteousness He humbled himself and he carried the cross Love so amazing, love so amazing Jesus Messiah, name above all names Blessed redeemer, Emmanuel The rescue for sinners, the ransom from heaven Jesus Messiah, Lord of all His body the bread, his blood the wine Broken and poured out, all for love The whole earth trembled and the veil was torn Love so amazing, love so amazing
All our hope is in you, all our hope is in you All the glory to you, God, the light of the world! Jesus Messiah, name above all names Blessed redeemer, Emmanuel The rescue for sinners, the ransom from heaven Jesus Messiah, Lord of all
How Deep the Father’s Love for Us How deep the Father’s love for us, how vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son, to make a wretch His treasure How great the pain of searing loss, the Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the Chosen One, bring many sons to glory Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon His shoulders Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice, call out among the scoffers It was my sin that held Him there, until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life, I know that it is finished I will not boast in anything, no gifus, no power, no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart, His wounds have paid my ransom
Confession (we approach God, repenting from sin) Heidelberg Catechism, Questions 49-50 49. Question: How does Christ’s ascension into heaven benefit us? Answer: First, He is our Advocate in heaven before His Father. Second, we have His flesh in heaven as a sure promise that He, our Head, will also take us, the parts of His body, up to Himself. Third, He sends us His Spirit as a deposit and guarantee, and by the Spirit’s power we seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God, and not the things that are on earth. 50. Question: Why does it also say, “and sits at the right hand of God?” Answer: Christ ascended into heaven to show Himself there as Head of His church, and through Him the Father governs all things.
James 3:8-12 No human being can tame the tongue It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison With it we bless our Lord and Father And with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God From the same mouth come blessing and cursing My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
Dear Father, How many times a day do we sin with our mouths? Forgive us for the hypocrisy in our words, when we praise one minute and complain the next. We know we shouldn’t be like this. We confess the sins of our mouths, the poison of half truths, all the times we didn’t share our faith, the many grumbles against Your plans, and the times we shared bad stories about others. Help us, for we cannot tame our words. Give us new tongues, filled with the Holy Spirit. Let living gospel water flow from our mouths! Teach us to praise, to encourage, and to bless many with the things we say. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen. Silence
Absolution What does Christ promise us based on Isaiah 53? He was pierced for our rebellions We trust Your sacrifice for our sins He was crushed for our twistedness We praise You for suffering for us On Him was the punishment that brings us peace We exalt Your wonderful grace By His wounds we are healed Who could imagine such a savior? All we like sheep have gone astray We did nothing to deserve such love We have turned—every one—to his own way So we surrender our ways to You The I Am put on Him the twistedness of us all Therefore make us walk in Your new life
Offering (we give thankfully, acknowledging that everything belongs to our God) www.firstpresbyteriansf.org/give Song of Assurance The Lord Is Gracious And Compassionate The Lord is gracious and compassionate Slow to anger and rich in love (x2) The Lord is good to all He has compassion in all that he has made Praise the Lord, oh my soul Praise the Lord (x2) As far as the east is from the west That’s how far he has removed our transgressions from us (x2)
Let us bless the Lord! Praise Him with highest praise! What sort of church are we seeking God to make us? Acts 2:42-45 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
