Be Invested • “ The more you put into this job, the more you’ll get out of it. ” – The students can tell. – And so can your co-workers.

Communicate What You Want • Be your own advocate. • Field trips, advanced notice of events, etc. • Willingness to stay late and help. – English tests – Speech contests – English Club – Club Activities

Language Barrier • The Importance of: – Body Language – Actions – Positive Attitude • Stay Late. (Pick one day a week.)

JET Job Skills High School ALT

Japanese students must apply to high school in their last year of junior high (roughly 9th grade).

Different types of high schools: Academic Vocational Part-time / Evening school Special Needs (e.g. Blind / Deaf )

Grades 1st year students = 10th grade 2nd year students = 11th grade 3rd year students = 12th grade [4th year students = 13th grade] The terms freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior are not generally used.

Students at all types of high schools take English throughout all grades, sometimes multiple English courses per semester. Grammar Vocabulary Writing / Composition Translation Oral Communication

All 1st-year high school students take Oral Communication (OCI). This is the only course focused on conversational proficiency, as opposed to reading, writing and listening comprehension.

Assistant Language Teacher What is an ALT?

Why are ALTs important? What is the purpose of having an ALT in the classroom?

Add relevance / motivation to English studies. Therefore…Try to get students to like you and want to talk to you.

Lend authenticity to English studies. Therefore…Try to use correct grammar and to support / reinforce JTE ’ s instruction.

Provide cultural exposure. Therefore… a) Show respect and interest in Japanese culture and the school culture. b) Incorporate cultures from all over the world. c) Be careful not label one custom ‘ normal ’ and another ‘ weird ’ .

Be professional assistant teachers. Therefore… Try to stay busy. Offer to help. Find work to do. Be punctual. Dress more formally than you think you should (at least at first).
