HALO + EVO + PURITY Introduction to E-Liquid Ingredients Hosted by: Mindy Williams, PhD(c) Regulatory Compliance Specialist July 2016 Nothing herein shall be interpreted as legal advice to any party.
The four basic ingredients in e-liquid: Propylene Glycol Vegetable Glycerin Nicotine Flavo rin g
Propylene Glycol • Colorless, odorless liquid with a fairly sweet taste • Organic compound • Chemically classed as a diol • Produced from propylene oxide • Commonly used in edible items such as coffee-based drinks, ice cream, whipped dairy products, and soda • Also used as a solvent in pharmaceuticals. Commonly found in diazepam and lorazepam • Toxicity of PG is very low as it is metabolized into pyruvic, acetic, and lactic acid by the human body upon ingestion. • Not carcinogenic or genotoxic 3
Vegetable Glycerin 4 • Clear odorless liquid produced from plant oils • Produced via hydrolysis • Higher viscosity allowing more vapor production • Poses as a hydrating aid for burns • Used in low carbohydrate foods for sweetness and to maintain moisture • Found in many household products such as lotion, shampoo, and toothpaste
Nicotine • Para sympathomimetic alkaloid • Stimulant and relaxant drug • Commonly associated with cancer but studies have not proven it to be a carcinogen • Placebo controlled studies concluded that nicotine has a positive effect on fine motor skills, alertness and working memory. • Unlikely that a person will overdose on nicotine through smoking • Nicotine is toxic to certain insects and was used as an insecticide • Takes seven seconds for nicotine to reach the brain upon inhalation • Reduces appetite and raises metabolism
Flavoring • E-Liquid is produced with simple food grade flavoring and additives. • Some extracts of fruits are used in the making of e-liquid and are considered organic flavoring. • Our e-liquids do not contain any tobacco extracts. Tobacco extracts are likely to have tobacco specific nitrosamines. Generally e-liquid flavorings have a small number of ingredients that yield much fewer chemicals in vapor aerosol than the 7,000+ chemicals in cigarette smoke.
