  7. From Infrastructure to the Cloud  Broadband  Wi-Fi  Video  Cloud Computing KEY – Find a technology partner that will work closely with you to achieve the desired result

  8. Building a Resilient Infrastructure At the onset of Tusculum’s distance education program, bandwidth topped out at 45 Mbps • A complete reinvention of the network infrastructure first began in August of 2011 • Information Systems began exploring how to increase the bandwidth level. Decided to • replace the three different bandwidth providers with one managed solution This solution gained us four times the bandwidth. It also brought the monitoring and • reporting of our bandwidth usage under one roof, allowing for detailed reporting of usage statistics Tusculum partnered with ENA to increase our bandwidth to 100 Mbps. Due to the increase • in our online enrollments, we then upgraded to 200 Mbps. In Fall 2016, Tusculum became a 1 Gbps college campus. This solution also brought our off-campus Tusculum College sites onto one network, • allowing us to extend more managed services to Morristown and Knoxville campus locations.

  9. Managed Wi-Fi • Deployed ENA Air, a managed Wi-Fi solution, to provide students with seamless campus-wide connectivity • Planning for the future o Scalability o Capacity o Resiliency o Mobility

  10. Video Conferencing • Began using video conferencing technologies to bridge distance gaps o Initially purchased Tandberg technology with grant funds  Cost-prohibitive for long-term sustainability and growth o Made the decision to purchase and deploy a cloud-based video conferencing solution – Video Collaboration Powered by Zoom

  11. Annual Growth The Fall 2015 semester saw the online program generate almost $900,000.00 in revenue Spring 2017 140 sections • Over 900 • enrollments

  12. Cloud Computing Wanted to find a means to host Moodle • Researched a variety of cloud solutions o Selected ENA TrustCompute o Building a collaborative Moodle with five other colleges using new • cloud solution Next steps and vision for the cloud •

  19. Cloud Computing by Definition

  20. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST—an agency of the US Department of Commerce) Essential Characteristics of Cloud • Broad Internet access • On-demand self-service • Resource pooling Rapid elasticity • • Metered service Cloud Service Models Infrastructure Platform Software as a Service (IaaS) as a Service (PaaS) as a Service (SaaS) Cloud Deployment Models Public Community Hybrid Private Cloud Cloud Cloud Cloud www.ena.com 20

  21. Cloud Service Models Traditional IT Infrastructure as a Service Platform as a Service Software as a Service “Cloud Computing” Provider Managed Provider Managed Provider Managed Examples: Example: Example: • AWS EC2 • Microsoft Azure • Facebook • ENA TrustCompute • IBM Bluemix • Google Classroom www.ena.com 21

  22. Leveraging Cloud to Solve Problems

  23. IT Challenges in Education New data center edges Data integrity and recoverability Data security and privacy Budget constraints and skills gaps New technologies Federal, state, and local compliance requirements Accessibility and availability www.ena.com 23

  24. What is your objective? Data center replacement Capacity on demand Internet facing workloads Offsite backup Disaster recovery Cost-effective compute www.ena.com 24

  25. Cloud Strategies Cloud Aware Aware of broad cloud trends Not yet prepared to adopt public cloud But preparing for an eventual move Cloud Experimentation Learning about SaaS, PaaS and IaaS Deploying common SaaS solutions Testing IaaS deployments Preparing the IT Organization for the Cloud: Transforming the IT Organization www.educause.edu/ecar/ecar-working-groups/cloud www.ena.com 25

  26. Cloud Strategies Opportunistic Cloud Seeking out cloud solutions New services may remain on premises Choosing cloud when benefits are seen Cloud First Cloud at top of decision-making chain Cloud fulfills majority of needs Migration planning for legacy services www.ena.com 26

  27. Assessing the Value of Cloud Computing

  28. What is right for your organization? Identify your objectives Assess the cost Assess your technology Evaluate vendor offerings One size does not fit all!

  29. The tipping point Taking a second look at the cloud Significant new investment looming Significant resource constraints Change to risk profile Change in budget / funding Change in on premise application scope (shrinking data center)
