Increasing outreach activities in the Illinois Geometry Lab Claire Merriman University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Illinois Geometry Lab ◮ Undergraduate research lab ◮ Outreach in the local community
What is outreach? We prove a glimpse of higher level mathematics and research to the Urbana-Champaign community. What? ◮ Info booths ◮ Field trips and classroom visits ◮ Math carnivals ◮ Summer camp Who? ◮ General public ◮ School groups ◮ Contests and events
Mathways grant NSF Grant to increase Merit Scholars participation in the IGL ◮ Course release for postdocs who run 3 semester long projects ◮ Coding boot camp for first time IGL participants ◮ RA for graduate students developing outreach material ◮ Running IGL outreach and Summer Illinois Math Camp ◮ New field trip activities ◮ New math carnival activities ◮ Activities for the Merit Calculus classes ◮ Hire Merit students as assistant instructors at SIM Camp

Undergraduate Outreach Club Goals ◮ Engage our community through math ◮ Develop outreach materials ◮ Enhance community aspect in our department ◮ Gain friends through attending trainings, events ◮ Working with other campus RSO?s ◮ Grow to better serve local schools ◮ With more participants, make a larger impact
Undergraduate Outreach Club Membership ◮ Monthly meetings ◮ One training session per semester ◮ Gain familiarity with the activities we ◮ Get to know fellow members ◮ One outreach event per semester
IGL research project Developing Exciting Outreach Material ◮ Formalize lesson plan for Platonic Solids Activity ◮ Develop 3-4 new activities (some using existing material) ◮ Explore mathematical concepts that could become exciting outreach materials
