  1. I needed to design a way for the rod to be detachable. I came up with a twist and lock dome shaped mechanism. This would look good but could be unhygienic as it would be hard to clean. ¡

  2. I made a bayonet fitting using the lathe and milling machine. I have chosen to use this in my final design because the execution of this piece is more subtle and does not cause hygiene problems. Although when I make it again the slot will need to be longer to ensure that the mechanism locks properly.

  3. To understand how the vessel would be produced I made a papier-mâché model and I spun a copper sheet to the correct size. Making these models made me realise that some raising would need to be done as the shape was not suitable to be spun unless I had a special chuck made.

  4. I then made the spout from a copper tube that I planished around an oval mandrill. This was then cut to the correct shape. Attached to the removable rod is a ring that I've designed to assist in manoeuvring the pouring vessel. It needs to be loose fitting to allow for easy movement, which is why I decided to size it as ring size O as this is larger than the average women's ring size.

  5. This is my design proposal. The pouring vessel has been spun and raised to the shape and size that I desired. Costs Silver sheet - £160 Silver wire - £16 Gold Plating - £50 Contingency – 10%

  6. My pouring vessel is a playful conversation starter that is intended to be played with, engage the user and open up their imagination. The design reflects on Aimee Mullins’ inspiring character as a campaigner trying to change the views that people have of the physically disabled. It affords several options for grip whilst pouring which was inspired by her different strengths and abilities when wearing different prosthetic legs.
