Provincial Assessments There are 3 required Graduation Assessments in B.C. 1. Graduation Numeracy Assessment – Grade 10 2. Graduation Literacy Assessment – Grade 10 and Grade 12 3. Evaluation de litteratie- French Immersion students only – Grade 12 • Required for graduation. • Not based on specific courses, but on numeracy and literacy developed across all grades and areas of learning. • Scored on a proficiency scale not a percentage or letter grade. All scores are acceptable for the graduation requirement. • Students may re-write the assessments. The best outcome for each will be recorded on the final transcript.
HSS Semester System Semester 1 Semester 2 • September – January. • February- June. • 5 Months with a 2 week Christmas Break. • 5 months with a 2 week Spring Break. Students take 4 courses per semester with a total of 8 courses in the semester system.

Mathematics Workplace Mathematics 10 This pathway prepares students for entry into the majority of trades, college and the work force. Topics include algebra, geometry, measurement, number, statistics and probability. Foundations of Math and Pre-Calculus 10 This pathway prepares students for entry into college and university. This is a challenging course with a more theoretical focus.

French Immersion 10 Includes three mandatory courses. • Francais Langue 10 ( in place of an elective) • Sciences Humaines 10 (in place of SS 10) • Education a la Vie Professionelle 10 (in place of Career Life Education 10) Scheduled during X block .
Electives Students have 6 required courses in Grade 10 and 3 elective courses. HSS has several Departments all offering a variety of electives. 1. Languages - French, French Immersion and Spanish. 2. Technology – Robotics and Skills Exploration. 3. Business - Web Development and Media Design. 4. Fine Arts- Band, Drama, Art and Dance. 5. PE - Cross Training and Hockey Academy. 6. Home Economics- Foods and Textiles.
Hockey Academy 10 • Half Day in the First Semester. • 4 PHE (required credits) + 4 (elective credits) = 8 credits. • Pacific Rim Hockey Academy & HSS collaboration. • Cost $1820. More information and how to sign up available on the HSS website.
Other Courses Learning Strategies 10 • This is a course for students with IEP’s called LNS at DRMS. English Language Learner 10 • For students who have English as a second language. Grade 11 Academics • Some students may wish to take a Grade 11 academic in the second semester. • Choices are English, Science, Math and SS 11. One only from this section is recommended.
Outside of Timetable Courses • May choose one of these classes. Not required. These classes usually happen once per week after school with the exception of Jazz band which is twice per week, one morning and one afternoon. Citizenship Sports* Fine Arts Leadership 10 Basketball 11* Jazz Band 10 Athletic Leadership 10 Cycling 11* Concert Choir 10 Aboriginal Leadership 10 Musical Theatre 10 Yearbook 10 * Cross Training, Basketball and Cycling are only offered as grade 11/12 courses so a student can only get credit for taking one course twice or two courses once in grades 10 – 12.
Career Life 10 2 credits Career Life Education or Education a la Vie Professionnelle 10 • Students take their first steps in developing a personal post-secondary plan and build a foundation for the Grade 12 capstone project. • Continues into Grade 11 (2 credits) and Grade 12 (4 credits) with the same teacher and students. • Students will choose a theme based on their current interests.
Career Life Explorations 9 Themes 1. Applied Technologies- mechanics, carpentry, robotics, drafting and cooking. 2. Social Sciences- history, politics, social justice, journalism and culture. 3. STEM- science, mathematics and engineering. 4. Creative Arts- studio art, graphic design, band, dance, theatre or drama. 5. Computer Technologies- media arts, robotics, computer programming, gaming and web development. 6. Business and Entrepreneurship- accounting, marketing and tourism. 7. Health Sciences- sports, exercise, the outdoors and healthy living. 8. Literacy- language arts, creative writing, journalism and literature. 9. French Immersion- Mandatory for French Immersion students.
