Being a peer reviewer for EU-Horizon 2020 Anja Declercq
How do you become a reviewer? You can register as an expert in the participant portal
Why did I register? Gaining knowledge about the review process for EU-proposals Becoming better at writing a good proposal 3
Then I was invited to review 19 first stage proposals for a two- stage call I received a login Can see the proposals in an online portal Get a quite extensive manual on how to score and also about confidentiality There is a helpdesk for questions – reacts very fast Well organised! 4
Process 5 reviewers per proposal Median score (not average) was taken into account Outliers can be omitted In some instances, there is a process of concertation between reviewers, in Brussels. This was not the case here, I do not know who the other reviewers were, nor what the end scores were. 5
How to review 2 x 5 questions: questions were based upon/clearly linked with call (in this case: 5 on innovative characteristics of the research and 5 on valorisation) Have to score AND give a clear motivation for the score This is checked: for two items in two different reviews, I was asked to expand on my motivation. So: not something you do in between other tasks, need to spend sufficient time Is compensated financially (fixed amount per review) 6
Would I do it again? 7
