Enhance the local and commercial use of fish management catch 4. Improve the understanding of nuisance algae and the measures how to prevent mass development of nuisance algae 5. Improve the knowledge and methods of management of reed beds 6. Enhance the use of harvested reed as raw material 7. Increase the knowledge and involvement of local people in lake monitoring 8. Increase cooperation between local residents and surrounding organizations 9. Increase international cooperation and create professional networks

  5. Project plan: 4 workpackages WP1 External loading Improve the knowledge and methods on the management of external loading. Reduce external loading. WP 2 Management of fish communities Improve the knowledge and the efficiency of methods on the management of fish stocks. Enhance the commercial use of management catch. WP 3 Water quality and phytoplankton blooms Improve the understanding of nuisance algae and the measures how to prevent mass development of them. WP 4 Reed management Improve the understanding of the reed management. Enhance the use of harvested reed as raw material.

  6. Joint actions 5 workshops: 1. November 2017: Reduction of external loading (Lake Vesijärvi Foundation) 2. April 2018: Fish management (LUVY) 3. September 2018: Plankton and water quality (Regito AB) 4. Spring 2019: Reed management (Lake Vesijärvi Foundation) 5. Autumn 2019: Final workshop (LUVY)

  7. Joint actions Writing of the synthesis of best practices Synthesis 1: Best practices in reducing external loading + new innovations + simple instructions to land owners for the monitoring and maintenance of water protection structures Synthesis 2: Best practices in the management of fish stocks + simple instructions how to fish and use less valuable fish Synthesis 3: Better understanding of the development of phytoplankton blooms + simple instructions for citizen-based monitoring of water quality Synthesis 4: Best practices in the management and use of reeds + simple instructions how to manage own shore

  9. Local actions Lake Vesijärvi Foundation WP 2 Management of fish communities Knowledge of fish population: T-Bar - marking of fish → T -Bar marking (roach, bream and pikeperch) reveal the migrations of the fish between lake basins. This involve local fishermen in gathering data and give valuable information for the https://lomakkeet.luke.fi/kalamerkki development of management fishing methods, fishing restrictions and stocking policy Creating a web based service for collecting fishing data → Vesijärvisäätiö participates the work of LUVY in the development of web based service. Figs. Irma Peltola & Matti Kotakorpi

  10. Local actions Lake Vesijärvi Foundation Development and construction of management fishing gears → Construction (voluntary work of fishermen) of new fishing gears to overcome the fishing problems during blooms net fouling algae (less dense messes) 2017: 23.1. – 3.2. Anniversary: already 25 th time!

  11. Local actions Lake Vesijärvi Foundation Development and construction of Statistics 2018: management fishing gears - 69 persons → Also other types of fishing gears, such as - 2954 working hours seine nets, fish traps, smaller fyke nets New gears: - 2 seine nets + bottom - 2 spare bottoms - 1 large fyke net (height 3 m) - 100 fish traps Repaired gears: 1 seine net 1 large fyke net 2018: 7 small fyke nets 22.1. – 2.2.

  12. Local actions Lake Vesijärvi Foundation WP 1 External loading The functioning and improvement of existing water protection structures Promotion and communication about natural based field drainage

  13. Local actions Lake Vesijärvi Foundation WP 3 Water quality and phytoplankton blooms Targeting the management efforts in different parts of Lake Vesijärvi Monitoring of net fouling algae together with local fishermen → Monitoring the occurrence, timing and extent of net fouling algae together with local fishermen. Involvement of local residents in water protection and monitoring Fig. Matti Kotakorpi

  14. Local actions Lake Vesijärvi Foundation WP 4 Reed management Development of reed management plans Development of winter mowing The use of reed as raw material

  15. Local actions Association for Water and Environment of Western Uusimaa (Luvy) WP 2 Management of fish communities Involving local residents in fisheries management and monitoring → Workshops on building fishing tackles and testing them. Gathering essential information of fisheries and increasing involvement of local anglers for fisheries management. Creating a web based service for collecting fishing data Developing easy methods for gathering fishing data and methods for data visualization. Improving the utilization of local fish Events and funding measures that promote utilization of local fish, for example workshops on fish handling and preparation of fish delicacies. 16. Local actions Association for Water and Environment of Western Uusimaa (Luvy) WP 2 Management of fish communities Enhancing the predatory fish population in Lake Enäjärvi Together with local fishing area, improvement of breeding grounds of predatory fish. Aim is to enhance the predatory fish population and improve the top down regulation in the target lake. Protecting eel migration in River Karjaanjoki Studies together with local fishing areas on the current status of eel population and eel migration. At the moment eel is stocked in inland waters but hydro power plants decrease its survival downstream. Possible measures for eel transfers downstream.

  17. Local actions Pyhäjärvi Institute WP 2 Management of fish communities Figs: www.pyhajarvi-instituutti.fi Evaluating the effects of the predatory fish population on water quality This evaluation is a tool for local fishing association to manage the fish stocks (introduction of different fish species, rules for fishing). Increasing of the use of local fish for food Negotiations with local fishers and food industry about fishing and processing fish

  18. Local actions Pyhäjärvi Institute WP 1 External loading Inventory of condition and efficiency of existing water protection measures and improving the structures with local non-governmental organizations Simple tools and guidance of monitoring and maintenance for the land owners Listing potential funding for investments Finding out if cottage owners are interested to do joint purchase of dry toilets or gray water filters.

  19. Local actions Pyhäjärvi Institute WP 3 Water quality and phytoplankton blooms Collecting and combining the information and results of water analysis and presenting results in popular form Collecting the data of phytoplankton blooms WP 4 Reed management Collecting the information of cutting and use of reed. Piloting the new cutting methods.

  20. Local actions Osby municipality WP 1 External loading External load related to the brownification of Lake Immeln. Figs: www.osby.se, www.camping.se WP 3 Water quality and phytoplankton blooms Describing the deterioration of the water quality of Lake Immeln Investigating the occurrence of toxic cyanobacteria in Lake Immeln in combination with physical and chemical factors.
