His Name is John Luke 1:57-66
God completes his work when he accomplishes his purpose. ‣ God Completes Elizabeth’s Disgrace (1:57-58) ‣ God Completes Zechariah’s Discipline (1:59-66)
Elizabeth’s Disgrace Luke 1:57-58 • God Brings Disgrace to an End (1:57) • God Receives Praise for His Grace (1:58)
Elizabeth’s Disgrace Luke 1:57-58 • God makes his mercy greater than he makes our miseries for the praise of his great grace. • The greater your misery is the greater God’s mercy is. And the greater his mercy is the greater his praise will be.
“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” ~Romans 8:18, ESV
Zechariah’s Discipline Luke 1:59-66 • We have a contrast and similarity between Elizabeth and Zechariah. - Elizabeth has undergone disgrace from no fault of her own, and God in his time removes that disgrace. - Zechariah has undergone discipline because of his sin, and God in his time removes that discipline.
Zechariah’s Discipline Luke 1:59-66 • Disciplined to Remain Obedient. (1:59-62)
“This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised.” ~Genesis 17:10–12, ESV
Zechariah’s Discipline Luke 1:59-66 • Disciplined to Remain Obedient. (1:59-62) • Disciplined to Learn Obedience (1:63-66)
Zechariah’s Discipline Luke 1:59-66 • God makes our good greater than he makes our grief for the praise of his great grace. • Discipline will continue until the good produced by God’s grace is greater than the grief produced by your sin.
