High culture
Definition • This means the upper class of society and the culture this bracket offers. This culture can range from fashion, sports, and money. High end fashion costs a lot of money and only the upper class can afford to this which is within the high culture. Sports can consist of special seats within stadiums that only the high culture can sit in. Expensive seats can also be bought by these people. The rich tend to have more access to high end accessories. • For example, hundreds of years ago this would include the art of Michelangelo and the music of Mozart, as well as other interests in things like the theatre or architecture. These days an individual of high culture may wear designer brands of clothing, go to watch a ballet and enjoy expensive dining. High culture may be different across time (and parts of the world), yet it is still recognisable in excluding the mass of society. It provides a framework of what is considered as quality, which is translated down through to popular culture, where the vast population can copy parts of this lifestyle in a cheaper, simpler, more accessible way.

The Guardian article – High culture versus Pop culture: which is best for engaging students? “High culture may include renaissance art, classical music and opera… more sophisticated and intellectually challenging.” Video tutorial by Zach Lamb - High culture and Popular culture “It’s important to point out that high culture is not inherently better than popular culture. High culture is high culture because it excludes the mass of society.”

Values • High culture is very valuable amongst fashion and it sets a standard of quality that people will admire. • In terms of status this value is one of the most important cultures. • Could be viewed as less valuable to people who are in other cultures like popular culture.
Own opinion • High culture is very exclusive and caters towards the high class of society; it makes it so certain resources are hard to obtain because of the amount of money associated with that subject. • The quality of goods that high culture offers inspires lower classes to find similar clothes to purchase that may be part of a fashion trend. • Intimidation factors like people dressing a certain way to go to an event that is local to the area; people dressed in expensive clothing etc. • People in high culture seem to be more educated in history, art and literature more than most.
