Who we are The Health Professions Education Foundation (HPEF) is a state non-profit established in 1987. Since 1987, HPEF has awarded more than 12,882 scholarships and loan repayments totaling more than $146.7 million to California health professionals serving in all 58 counties in areas of unmet need.
Our Mission HPEF aims to improve healthcare in underserved areas of California by providing scholarships and loan repayments to those who are dedicated to providing direct patient care in those areas.
A look at our programs HPEF offers 13 scholarship and loan repayment programs to students and health professionals who agree to provide direct patient care for one to three years in California ’ s underserved communities. Associate Degree Nursing Scholarship Program (ADN) • Purpose: Increase the number of registered nurses practicing direct patient care in medically underserved areas of • California Awarded up to $8,000 • • Eligibility Criteria: • Currently accepted or enrolled in an Associate Degree Nursing program in California • Commit to a service obligation providing direct patient care in a medically underserved area of California for 12 months • Free from any other service obligation

Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Loan Repayment Program • Purpose: • Increase the number of vocational nurses practicing direct patient care in medically underserved areas of California • Awarded up to $6,000 • Eligibility Criteria: • Currently licensed and practicing as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) • Commit to a service obligation providing direct patient care in a medically underserved area of California for 12 months • Provide direct patient care of 32 hours or more a week • Have educational debt from a lending institution • Free from any other service obligation
Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) Loan Repayment Program • Purpose: • Increase the number of Registered Nurses and encourage Registered Nurses to practice direct patient care in medically underserved areas of California • Awarded up to $10,000 • Eligibility Criteria: • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in CA and have a BSN degree • Commit to a service obligation providing direct patient care in a medically underserved area of California for one year • Provide direct patient care of 32 hours or more a week • Have educational debt from a lending institution • Free from any other service obligation
