  3. Agenda 1. Preamble 2. Green Key 1. Organization 2. Criteria (where do they grow?) 3. Content 4. Auditing 3. Green Key and government

  4. EU-ZEN Τhe same survey found out that 42% of respondents believed that the responsibility for minimizing these damages lies with local authorities, as many of the negative effects of events are felt immediately at local level, with increase in noise and air pollution, waste production, pressure on transport and infrastructure and damage to fragile cultural heritage. Based on these data, the main focus of ZEN is to work with different know-how and experiences to provide common solutions at EU level dealing with the reduction of these negative effects on urban settings of cultural and artistic significance and that will provide a roadmap to manage and protect cultural heritage in occasion of open-air events that attract large numbers of people.

  5. EU-ZEN …………….and that will provide a roadmap to manage and protect………………. ?

  20. Baseline criteria The way to a new set of international Green Key criteria: During the National Operators Meeting (NOM), a proposal must be summited. A minimum of countries must volunteer for adopting the criteria and the pilot phase.

  21. National criteria • On a national level the criteria are/must be based on the international baseline criteria. • 80% must meet • In the Netherlands every set of national criteria is written in collaboration with the relevant sector.

  22. The Law • Green Key is voluntary • Green Key requires more than complying with the law (permit)

  23. Criteria The criteria are divided into the categories: • Imperative to be fulfilled fully • Guideline (G) : designed to be part of the point system

  24. Criteria Establishments have to match some guideline criteria every year (except first year for new comers): Year Number of guideline criteria % of total guideline criteria 1 0 0% 2 3 5% 3 6 10% 4 9 15% 5 12 20% 10 and + 30 50%

  25. Green Key Festivals Two festivals have Green Key: * Liberation Festival Utrecht (pop music) * Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival Groningen New in 2013: * Sail de Ruyter 2013

  29. Auditing Green Key has a digital database “ mygreenkey ”, participants use this to store documents (evidence – pictures, policy, trainingmaterial, contracts, etc). Desk research (mygreenkey) and two visits: One visite 2 months before One visit during the event Professional and experienced auditors (also counselor) First audit in 2012 – > meet the criteria? -> Green Key in 2013

  30. Case Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival is the somewhat curious combination of an international arts festival on the cutting edge with exciting contemporary performing arts from all over the world ... and a big summer party in a freely accessible park. An annual festival around 135,000 visitors from Groningen, the rest of the country and the rest of the world (11 days).

  31. Case Festival organizations and municipalities We call this a “forced marriage” Dialogue is key!

  32. Case The municipality of Groningen: • Subsidy • Permit

  33. Case The municipality of Groningen: • Permit – not a lot of moving space - national legislation • Subsidy – municipality writes its own -> also CSR -> How? => Green Key!

  34. Case Liberation Festival Utrecht: • Permit – no CSR conditions • Subsidy – no CSR conditions => Green Key!

  35. Case Why Green Key: Responsibility towards visitors Distinguish the festival from other festivals You have a DIFFERENT/BETTER story to tell! Opens new doors to sponsors!

  36. Thesis 1. Want to succeed with green? Make it a competition! 2. Municipalities are the Key players in making festivals Greener! 3. Festival organizers are the Key players in making festivals Greener! => Green Key!

  37. Green Events, a new horizon?

  38. Goodbye

  39. Facts ………. or more things we can agree on …….

  40. Fact -> Growth In 2011 dance festivals in the Netherlands had a turnover of 137 million euro, a growth of almost 68 percent from 2002. A growing number of foreign visitors visit the Dutch dance events. The 20 festivals with international visitors generated a total income from tickets sales and other expenditure of 10 million receipts.

  41. Fact? -> important? • Festivals are an important part of leisure, because: • Growing number of events • Time available for and devoted to recreation • Number of people that is participating

  42. Fact? - > Influence? Festival organizers -> influence and responsibility: • Lot’s of people in small area’s, energy use, waste, safety; • They bring together all the stakeholders (commercial and non commercial); • Communication with the visitors (before, during and after);
