  2. Electric power economy management r Electric power quality control suppressing unwanted effects from the electricity supply

  3. Unwanted effects from the electricity supply r 1. Overvoltage and undervoltage in the power supply network • The normalised voltage in CZ and the EU is 230 V +/- 10% (207-253 V) • Most appliances are produced for voltages of 220-230 V • Overvoltage, undervoltage, frequent voltage fluctuations => unwanted effect on function, consumption, and the life of the appliance

  4. Unwanted effects from the electricity supply r 2. Phase voltage asymmetry • The voltage on each phase often differs by more than 5 V • Motors => incapable of smooth motion = performance degradation => offset by higher current • Consequence => conversion of electricity into mechanical rotational movement is asymmetrical => adverse effects on the function, life, and consumption of electrical appliances

  5. Unwanted effects from the electricity supply r 3. Low Power Factor (PF) • Caused by electric motors, and the quality of supplied electricity • Motor=> tendency to produce electricity, but also produces reactive power! • Reactive power => electricity converted into thermal energy in the work place • Consequence: overheating of conductors, reduced equipment life, increase in electricity consumption

  6. Unwanted effects from the electricity supply r 4. Harmonic distortion • Occurs due to the load, which distorts the sinusoidal current • This load is caused by e.g. computers, UPS, frequency converters ... • There is an increase of higher harmonics 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 • Overloading neutral conductors • Negative impact on the life of appliances

  7. Unwanted effects from the electricity supply r 250 Voltage [V] 200 5. Micro network outages 150 100 • Usually last a few tens to hundreds of ms 50 • They are caused by external disturbances 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 in distribution systems; Time [ms] • Cause problems in manufacturing processes for energy-sensitive devices, such as CNC centres, special manufacturing equipment, servers, technological processing lines • Reduced production on manufacturing lines => higher error rates and scrap production • Negative impact on the life of appliances

  8. Electric power quality control r Portfolio of products • Energy Savers • Active UPS • Static voltage stabilisers • Power factor correction • Harmonic distortion filters • Backup DC power source • Backup AC power source • Single and three-phase transformers

  9. Description of the main components of e-cont units r • Transformer – isolation transformers with multiple branching to increase and decrease the voltage, also acts as a passive harmonic filter. • Thyristor control – consists of several thyristors (power semiconductor elements) and the control unit switches between the transformer branching, controls the output voltage of the device +/- 1% as needed. • Real time compensation – reacts to changes in the network in a matter of 5-20 ms. Can increase the power factor up to cos φ 0.99 . • Active harmonic filter – reduces total harmonic distortion for the range of 2nd to 25th harmonics, or to a harmonic target.

  10. Energy Saver r • Each unit is made to measure, according to the type of load, from 16 A to 4.545 A • Optimizes the operating voltage to the desired value, depending on consumption (kWh) +/- 1% at each stage, stabilizes overvoltage and undervoltage • Reduces losses during power transmission • Filters distortion harmonic and interharmonic frequencies to the minimum level • Reduces reactive power (kVAr) to the minimum level • Removes transient surges and flickering fluctuations of voltage in the consumer’s network • Automatically compensates the power factor in real- time to 0.95 to 0.99 cos φ

  11. Energy Saver and the components used r • Network analyser • Terminal block inputs and outputs • Circuit breaker at the input to the Energy Saver • Circuit breaker at the output from the Energy Saver • Manual Bypass Switch and Saving Mode • Automatic Bypass during breakdowns of the Energy Saver • Thyristor control • Active harmonic filter • Power factor correction • Main and auxiliary transformers • Energy Saver controller
