  2. GRABS ARE USED BY TWO TYPES OF BULK CARRIERS: • Supramaxes, which are bulk carriers of about 57,000 DWT and, • Ultramaxes, which are bulk carriers of about 63,000 DWT • In combination with 30 or 35 tons SWL cranes, the can load or discharge cargoes where shore facilities are not available. • These ships usually have 4 cranes and 4 grabs, serving 5 holds. • A ship fitted with grabs earns more income, as the grabs are “hired” by the charterer. • But, when one of the grab does not work ¼ of the entire hire per day is deducted.

  4. More Information • Grabs are fitted on deck, so they are exposed to the elements, whether it is sea water, rain, ice, snow, dust etc. • Grabs are used by the stevedores at the ports. Crew does not operate the grabs, only maintain them. • Currently, 1957 Supramaxes and 558 Ultramaxes are sailing the worlds’ oceans. The majority of these ships are fitted with grabs. • It is a lucrative market.

  5. The Competition: Following, are the main competitors in this market: • Piener SMAG Maschinenbau GmbH (Germany) • Tobu Jukogyo Co. Ltd. (Japan) • Orts GmbH (Germany) • Guven (Turkey) • TGS BV (Netherlands)

  6. The Competition, More Comments: • SMAG is the “Rolls Royce” of the marine grabs. A set of 4 grabs can cost in excess of $ 500,000 per set. The company sells hydraulically operated grabs. • Tobu is equally expensive, and preferred maker of Japanese shipyards. • Guven is gaining ground, due to their low prices. They sell mechanical grabs. A cost of 4 grabs will cost approximately $ 180,000. • Ships are usually fitted with 10 or 12 m³ grabs. • After sales support is very critical in this business.

  7. Our proposal: • We would like to pursue the possibility of further cooperation in the sales of your grabs to shipping companies, and assist you and setting up a world-wide after sales service utilizing local engineers in key ports. • We would look for the exclusivity of sales of Anvil grabs to Greece and Cyprus, through our network. Greece is the biggest ship owning nation in the world. We owe about 19% of the world’s fleet, 25% of all the tanker fleet, 20% of all bulk carriers, 50% of all the European Union fleet and in 2016, so far, about 450 second hand ships have been sold, for a total value of about $ 5 billion. Greeks have bought half of all these ships.

  8. The Current Outlook of the Shipping Market • Shipping is in a recession right now. • Ships are not making a profit, at best they pay operating costs. This is applicable on almost all types of vessels. • Reason is the low price of oil and commodities, the state of the world economy and an overabundance of ships build in the past years. • Nevertheless, for cash rich ship owners, this period presents opportunities to buy second hand tonnage at very lucrative prices. • Ship building is now almost to a halt.

  9. Opportunities • When you purchase machinery the decision from whom to buy is based on fine balance between reliability and cost. • Every piece of machinery has a cost of purchase and a cost of maintenance during it’s working life. It is the decision of the buyer if he wants to pay 70% of the cost upfront to buy the machinery and 30% for servicing the equipment during the useful life time or vise versa. • If we can achieve a fine balance on cost, reliability and after-sales service, then we can sell your product. • The fact that we are in a downturn of the market presents opportunities to set up and organization to sell grabs to foreign ship owners and be ready when the market improves. • U.S. made equipment have the advantage of being recognized around the world as very reliable, so made in the U.S.A. is the biggest asset.
