A bit about Lamdon School and its historic relationship with UWCSEA

In ¡1973 ¡a ¡group ¡of ¡concerned ¡Ladakh ¡ci6zens ¡volunteered ¡to ¡start ¡up ¡Lamdon ¡School ¡in ¡an ¡ agempt ¡to ¡be ¡independent ¡of ¡the ¡government ¡school ¡system. ¡It ¡was ¡the ¡best ¡strategy ¡for ¡ preserving ¡Ladakh’s ¡unique ¡culture ¡and ¡tradi6on. ¡The ¡first ¡classrooms ¡were ¡basic ¡and ¡the ¡school ¡ struggled ¡to ¡survive. ¡It ¡started ¡with ¡12 ¡students ¡and ¡2 ¡teachers! ¡

Over ¡the ¡years, ¡interna6onal ¡alliances ¡between ¡Lamdon ¡School ¡and ¡ ¡ great ¡interna6onal ¡schools ¡like ¡UWCSEA ¡ ¡have ¡enabled ¡it ¡to ¡grow ¡into ¡the ¡premier ¡educa6onal ¡ins6tu6on ¡in ¡Ladakh ¡

Lamdon School - 2015 Lamdon School today has over 1,800 students attending classes in • Grades 1>12 There are 9 satellite campuses of Lamdon School with an additional • 1,000 students receiving basic education in some of the most remote regions of Ladakh 500 students who are orphans, underprivileged or from remote areas • live full time on campus in two large, fully equipped residential hostels Lamdon School is now a fully accredited Grade 12 institution with the • completion of a modern science classroom and laboratory complex funded and consecrated by His Holiness The Dalai Lama

A ¡Greener ¡Ladakh ¡  In ¡2008 ¡another ¡very ¡beneficial ¡project ¡was ¡started ¡at ¡Lamdon ¡ School ¡by ¡UWCSEA ¡ ¡  To ¡help ¡offset ¡the ¡carbon ¡emissions ¡of ¡our ¡interna6onal ¡students ¡ traveling ¡to ¡Ladakh ¡by ¡jet ¡aircra\ ¡as ¡well ¡as ¡to ¡provide ¡long ¡term ¡ revenue ¡for ¡Lamdon ¡School, ¡a ¡major ¡tree ¡plan6ng ¡scheme ¡has ¡ been ¡undertaken ¡ ¡  All ¡visi6ng ¡interna6onal ¡school ¡groups ¡will ¡now ¡be ¡dona6ng ¡ significant ¡money ¡to ¡purchase ¡and ¡then ¡plant ¡thousands ¡of ¡ indigenous ¡poplar ¡and ¡willow ¡trees ¡in ¡Ladakh ¡

A ¡Greener ¡Ladakh ¡ Income ¡for ¡the ¡future! ¡  Poplar ¡trees ¡planted ¡now ¡will ¡mature ¡in ¡12>15 ¡years ¡and ¡provide ¡ Lamdon ¡School ¡with ¡a ¡stable, ¡long ¡term ¡revenue ¡source ¡for ¡their ¡ con6nued ¡expansion ¡and ¡vitality. ¡  Poplar ¡trees ¡have ¡long ¡been ¡the ¡fundamental ¡building ¡material ¡ for ¡housing ¡beams ¡and ¡a ¡steady ¡supply ¡will ¡also ¡help ¡assure ¡that ¡ tradi6onal ¡construc6on ¡methods ¡will ¡con6nue ¡in ¡Ladakh. ¡

Phase 1 of the forestation project is virtually complete. The next challenge will be to lift water from the well to the 50,000 litre reservoir constructed at the highest point on the campus. The pump system has been completed, the first 2,000 trees in the newly expanded and irrigated groove area which have been planted. ¡ Existing groves Well > Reservoir
