Further Education Provision at Mackie Academy
2 different strands of provision Schools links courses Foundation Apprenticeships NESCOL Aberdeenshire Consortium Arbroath NESCOL
Schools Links Courses Give pupils the opportunity to undertake college courses whilst still at school Pupils have the opportunity to take courses that are unavailable in a school environment e.g. Vehicle Technology, Hair & Beauty, Social Services & Healthcare Build confidence, initiative and independence Guidance staff will speak to pupils about college options and complete the application process with them Some courses may not run if there are low numbers Not everyone is guaranteed a place - we share with pupils in both Aberdeen City and across Aberdeenshire - an interview may be required as some courses are very competitive
Full Time College Outside scope of this presentation but happy to answer any questions afterwards Full time college information, courses and application process available on relevant college websites Some pupils go HNC/HND → University route Pupils supported with applications by Guidance Staff/Careers Advisor same as they are for University applications Many pupils who do Schools Links courses go on to Full Time College - introduction to college experience

Expectations Travel - Buses are point to point and leave sharp at 0830 (Weds - NESCOL) and 0750 (D&A). They do not wait for pupils who are late. Pupils who have afternoon classes and take the train are responsible for picking up their tickets from Mrs Angel on a monthly basis. If buses are significantly late, they should send a representative to tell the office and remain with everyone else until further instruction. Peace Coaches run the NESCOL bus, Burns Coaches run the Arbroath bus Catching up on missed work - pupils who miss classes need to take responsibility for arranging to catch up with their subject teachers. Falling behind on in-school work is not a reason to skip college. Responsibilities - College is a more adult learning environment and pupils will be given more responsibility to manage their own work and keep track of deadlines. Progress reports are provided to the school on a regular basis. Google Classroom - Pupils will be set up on here and should check it regularly for important updates, college in service days etc Absences - If pupils are going to be absent from college, they should let their lecturer know as well as Mrs Angel/their Guidance teacher. The college track attendance and alert the school to missing pupils. Uniform - no uniform is required at college but if pupils are returning to school after college they should ensure they bring a change of clothes
Foundation Apprenticeships - Looking Forward to S5 & S6 Foundation Apprenticeships help young people gain valuable, real-world work experience and access work-based learning while they’re still at school. They give young people earlier exposure to the world of work and help them develop the skills, experience and knowledge they’ll need when they leave school. For young people it’s the chance to get a head start on their careers by gaining an industry-recognised qualification, work on real projects and broaden their career options when they leave school. Offered at SCQF Level 6 (equivalent to 1/2 Highers depending on FA) Check University recognition beforehand - there are differences across institutions
