Food Lion Retail Recovery Compliance Workshop
Food Lion & Second Harvest • The Food Lion Retail Recovery program is a partnership between America’s Second Harvest and Food Lion Corporate.
Product That Can Be Donated • Food Lion private label products, which are damaged or outdated. • All meat and processed meat items, including beef, pork, chicken, lunchmeat and prepackaged items, that are still safe to consume but cannot be sold at a reduced price and would otherwise be thrown out, may be donated. • Deli/Bakery items that can no longer be sold and would otherwise be thrown out.
Product That Can Be Donated • Produce items that no longer meet Food Lion’s fresh standards but are still fit for consumption, may be donated. • HBC - Health and beauty care items (excluding medicines) that are out of date or damaged.
Product That Cannot Be Donated • Food Lion Stores cannot donate any product that is spoiled. • Food Lion Stores cannot donate organ meats or seafood (i.e. liver).
Food Lion Responsibilities • Meat donations should be kept in the freezer until pick up. • Per the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food banks cannot accept unlabeled products. • Salvage product donations are to be given only to authorized Second Harvest food bank representatives, presenting a Second Harvest Identification Card displaying the food bank/agency name.
Food Lion Responsibilities • All product donations are to be properly receipted by the food bank/agency (utilizing the food bank/agency form), and signed by both the store management and the food bank representative. • If the food bank/agency does not have a donation form available, store management should provide the “Product Donation Form”
Partner Agency Responsibilities • The food bank/agency assigned to each store will provide a contact for store management to call to arrange donation pick-ups, as the store’s individual needs require. • Once contacted, the food bank/agency should arrange for pick-up within 24 hours. Upon arrival at the store, the food bank/agency will request the manager on duty to assist in the pick- up.
Partner Agency Responsibilities • Food Bank/agency picking up meat items is required to have meat products refrigerated during transport. At the very minimum, the agency needs to transport these products in a temperature- controlled cooler or freezer blanket.
