Folktales and Fables
Folktale traditional stories that have been passed down from one generation to the next by being told aloud. No matter what culture they came from, folktales usually have similar characteristics.
Elements of a Folktale ★ may have different versions ★ includes fantasy and magic\ ★ good vs. evil (good are rewarded) ★ indefinite setting (“long ago” or “once upon a time”)
Elements Continued ★ teaches lesson in life or nature ★ conflict is resolved “happily ever after” ★ royalty ★ certain #’s like 3 or 7 or 12 ★ characters are flat, one trait
Elements Continued ★ exaggerated- hyperbole ★ personification- object or animals have human traits ★ have trickery and unwise characters
Fable A story that has a moral or lesson (a type of fiction)
Elements of Fables ★ feature animals who act like humans ★ ends with a clear moral message ★ reflect concerns of the people living in the time the fables were made ★ Ex: Aesop’s Fables
