What Is Federal Work-Study? • Student employment funded by the US Department of Education • Work must be public, it can not involve religious, political or sectarian work • It includes a wide variety of jobs on and off campus • As of 2010-2011, Research opportunities are now included 2

How Do I Sign Up? • FAFSA, Payroll forms and appropriate Employment Approval Forms • Notify our office if you did not indicate yes on your FAFSA • Initial award $2,000.00 per academic year 15

How Do I Get Paid? • Submit accurate timesheet • Bi-weekly: See payroll Schedule • First round of payroll will be by check • Direct Deposit 25

Federal Work-Study FAQ’S 1. Do I pay taxes on my earnings? Yes, you will receive a W-2 and if you are required to file an income tax return you will include these earnings. 2. Do all types of jobs qualify? No, please always verify with our office prior to starting a position. 3. Can I develop my own work-study opportunities? Yes, generally the organization must be a not for profit and serve the public interest. If that is the case a Participation Agreement must be completed and submitted to our office. Review handbook for details or email our office azfinaid@midwestern.edu. 4. Can I work over the summer or during breaks? Yes, you must have completed a FAFSA and be eligible for FWS and be enrolled for the fall quarter. 27
More FAQ’S 5. Do I need approval for a job before I start working? Yes, each year and each new position requires a new employment approval form. 6. Do all positions need to be on campus? No, they can be on or off campus. 7. Am I restricted as to how much I can earn? Yes, students can earn up to the award amount Note: Changes can be made based on funding and eligibility. 8. How many hours a week can I work? 20 hours recommended no more than 8 hours a day . Federal Regulations state 40 hours a week and no more than 10 hours a day. 28
