  1. We must respect pect not only the abilitie ities and individ idual alitie ities of our gender der, , but also the enviro ironm nment nt in which h we live. . Our surround ndin ings gs give to us uncond ndit itiona nally. . Doesn’t nature deserve the “That's what people do when same thing? ng? - me me they find a special place that wild and full of life, they trample it to death.” - Dad Every time Dusty empties her holding tank, it's like flushing a hundred filthy toilets into God's ocean!" Hard Questions “Please don't grow up to be one of How can we preserve that which we love and still those men who lie for the sport of it, progress in the 21st Century? and most men do. That's a fact. That's why the world is so messed up, Noah. That's why history books are full of so much heartache, and tragedy. “I didn’t tell my parents what happened FAMILY Politicians, dictators, kings, phoney- because they would’ve freaked and gone baloney preachers-most of 'em are straight to Dusty Muleman, or maybe even men, and most of 'em lie like rugs” - the police, which was not how I wanted to Making de decisions Shelly handle it.” -Noah

  2. My Graffiti Wall Explanation Mrs. Rudder My graffiti wall is meant to point out various scenes in the book FLUSH by Carl Hiaasen. These scenes depict bigger ideas beyond the entertaining story. The bigger ideas of exploitation are presented throughout the book, and Hiaasen has clearly pointed out that he is angry at this exploitation of nature in Florida. Development and population growth has forced nature to take a “back seat.” There are hard questions posed in regards to this as pointed out in my wall. Many scenes in this book force us to think about family and the relationships that we make throughout our lives. Family can be a conflict as well as a support. But, I point out in my wall that there are decisions that must be made by a family and Hiaasen shows us the many decisions that Noah’s family had to make in various situations. I added a quote from Shelly because she is one of my favorite characters. She obviously has a “love - hate” relationship with men, but this points out the stereotypes that sometimes our genders live up to. Shelly, however, is a character that Hiaasen would appreciate. He seems to portray a tolerance of the individuality of people and can understand how “men” can sometimes show their immature and less desirable sides to women. As stated in the upper right corner, respect is the most important concept presented in this novel, in my opinion. Overall, my hashtag Live4Conservation goes beyond just conservation of the environment, but also conservation of our integrity as human beings.

  3. #FAMILYFIRST “Please don't grow up to be one of those men who lie for the sport of it, and most men do. That's a fact. That's why the world is so messed “I didn’t tell my parents what happened up, Noah. That's why history books because they would’ve freaked and gone are full of so much heartache, and straight to Dusty Muleman, or maybe tragedy. Politicians, dictators, even the police, which was not how I kings, phoney-baloney preachers- wanted to handle it.” most of 'em are men, and most of 'em lie like rugs” ― Carl Hiaasen , Flush

  4. Graffiti Wall by Collins Collins (Explanation of Graffiti Wall): My graffiti wall focuses mainly on family and the economy. Through the book FLUSH various points are made of how the economy is affected daily by us humans. Many times Carl Hiaasen has made remarks of how the economy is failing for example when he was talking about how Dusty poured sewage daily into the basin, When fishermen of the name of Derrick Mays was illegally net fishing, and when the Carmichaels were abusing their dogs.In this book family is a huge topic repeatedly discussed. Quotes that include family are, I didn’t tell my parents what happened because they would’ve freaked and gone straight to Dusty Muleman, or maybe even the police, which was not how I wanted to handle it, and “ Mom,Abbey,Dad,and I all squished together. Family is a complicated subject in FLUSH in some chapters they hate each other but in others they love each other. In FLUSH my favorite character is Noah, being the main character he and I have the most in common. Noah is a brave kind young man who not only supports his family but also backs them up. My hashtag is #FAMILYFIRST Since I believe that in FLUSH and in life family comes first. Overall, FLUSH is an inspiring amazing book I’ve enjoyed reading this and hope to read more of Carl Hiaasen.

  5. Claire I didn’t dare tell dad about the stranger grabbing my sister because i knew he’d bail himself out of jail #dowhatyoubeleive in a flash and go hunting for the guy.” #familyfirst Dang! Where did all the fish go??? -me in 35 years “I wasn’t proud that my dad was sitting in jail, but I knew he was a good person. Even when he flies off the handle, at least he’s fighting for something close to his heart.”

  6. Claire’s Graffiti Wall Claire’s explanation: My graffiti wall really shows my perspective on flush. I believe that this book was extremely powerful and influential to my beliefs and other readers beliefs on the environment. This book heavily influenced my perspective on nature and the environment and challenged my beliefs on how humans are affecting the planet. Before reading this book, I believed that what humans were doing was ok, sure there was some pollution and fishing, but overall it wasn’t doing significant damage. This book completely transformed my perspective and made me realize that our responsibilities as people are crucial and can either have a positive or negative impact on other animals, plants, oceans, and or earth in general. My wall is all about how carl hiaasen expresses his beliefs on overfishing, pollution, etc. It dramatically changes readers perspectives on the world and makes the reader think to themself, “what am I doing for the environment and if it is negative how can I change my actions?” This is crucial to the power that humans have that is one of the causes of how our earth is gradually being destroyed. I thought flush was a fantastic book and it completely changed my perspective on life. In conclusion, I made my graffiti wall all about carl hiaasen’s novel flush and how it affects change in the environment. Overall, this was a great book and it had a huge impact on my perspective of the environment.

  7. "I wasn't proud that my dad was sitting in jail, but I knew he was a good person. Even when he flies off the handle, at least he's fighting for something close to his heart." (Chapter 4, page 46) “‘All the kids on the island go swimming here - and he’s poisoning the place with all this...this…’ ‘Ca - ca?’ Abbey said”

  8. John DeLeo's graffiti wall I wanted to emphasise the family portion of the book with my #FRIENDS AND FAMILY IS IMPORTANT. I felt like it was an overlooked part of the book so I tried to bring it out into the open. I also felt inspired that the dad was willing to give up everything just to fight for a cause and that is why I have the quote "I wasn't proud that my dad was sitting in jail, but I knew he was a good person. Even when he flies off the handle, at least he's fighting for something close to his heart." (Chapter 4, page 46) The last part I included is the pollution part of the book, probably one of the biggest topics in the book I really liked and thought should stop. That is why I chose the picture of two kids swimming near trash in the ocean, you can barely see one of the kids in the water.

  9. Amelia FaMILY “According to my Father, Dusty Muleman was such a pathetic cheapskate that he wouldn’t pay to have the Attention, kids! THIS IS ADVERTISING!! (circa 2056) How would you like to win… a beach vacation?! Hmm… well, it might not be all that fun. Coral Queen’s sewage The resort you’re staying at is covered in pounds of toxic plastic trash and rotting plant and animal matter! But that’s ok! If you wipe that indestructible algae off your window, hauled away.” you’ll have a beautiful view of the disgusting, acidicly orange ocean and maybe even catch a mutated jellyfish! So maybe think twice before tossing your trash into that sewer, ok?

  10. AMELIA My slide focuses on the three main themes in the novel Flush , conservation, greed, and family relationships. In the Carl Hiaasen interview, he shows us how these themes are very prevalent in his own life. Just like the Noah, he has a very “family first” attitude about life, because of his great affection and love for both his family members and his home state of Florida. He is very angry when he hears about people doing horrible things to the environment, and he is a great activist for conservation and the environment. He also hates that politicians care only for the money, and the voters that keep them in power, and often don’t focus on the bigger picture, which is that money won’t matter when there are no more fish to protect, and no more wild spaces to love. I think that this is a very big issue that not many people bring up, and I am frankly just as disgusted as Carl Hiaasen at the greedy, selfish people who think ore of money than they do about the wellness of our planet.
