  7. GOSPEL LEARNING The Gospel today is from St. John. The fourth Sunday of Easter is sometimes called Good Shepherd Sunday because Jesus talks about what it means to be the shepherd of the sheep. He also compares himself to the gate that sheep go through to get into the sheepfold, the yard where they stay at night for safety. Jesus says that a good shepherd recognizes his sheep and that the sheep recognize and follow the shepherd.

  8. GOSPEL READING: JOHN 10:1-10 “The Good Shepherd” Source: New Testament Pinoy Version Catholic Edition

The Gospel of the Lord. Source: New Testament Pinoy Version Catholic Edition

  11. LIVING THE GOSPEL 1. SITUATION What qualities does a good leader possess?

  12. LIVING THE GOSPEL 2. GOSPEL THEME The Good Shepherd is the leader who lays down his life for the sheep, his flock. He is the caring companion, who protects them, whose voice they recognize and who provides pasture and life for them. The believer is thus offered a relationship of trust and safety because of the action of the shepherd. The use of this image indicates the intimate and close bond between the members of the flock, the Church with Jesus, the shepherd.

  13. LIVING THE GOSPEL 3. GOSPEL CHALLENGE In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that there is only one way to abundant life and that way is through him. As a family, continue establishing an intimate and close bond with Jesus. Set a common prayer time for this week and reflect on Psalm 23, “The Divine Shepherd”.

  14. TRIVIA: FIRST CENTURY PALESTINE SHEPHERDING PRACTICES The sheep were gathered for the night in an enclosed area which had but one opening and no gate. The shepherd would lay across the opening during the night, to protect the sheep from any possible predators, and so was himself the gate. Several flocks would be mixed together, but the sheep would recognize the shepherd’s voice and respond to none other when called. Last of all, rather than walking behind the sheep and using dogs and other animals to keep the flock together as is done today, the shepherd would walk in front of the sheep and lead them.
