FAMILY GOSPEL REFLECTION MAY 31, 2020 PENTECOST SUNDAY
OPENING PRAYER Dear Jesus, Transform our hearts from fear to joy. In your name we pray. Amen.
GOSPEL LEARNING The Gospel today is from St. Matthew. The disciples were gathered in fear behind locked doors. They felt the reversal of their fear to joy and their transformation from frightened followers to apostolic witnesses (“apostle” means “one sent”). At the heart of this change is the presence of the Risen Lord, the command to go forth, and the giving of the Spirit.
GOSPEL READING: JOHN 20:19-23 “Appearance to the Disciples” Source: New Testament Pinoy Version Catholic Edition
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 19 Nung Sunday ng gabi, magkakasama ang mga disciples sa isang room. Naka-lock ang mga pinto kasi natatakot sila sa mga Jewish leaders. Dumating si Jesus at tumayo sa gitna nila. “Peace be with you,” sabi nya. 20 Pagkasabi nito, pinakita nya sa kanila ang mga kamay at tagiliran nya. Sobrang tuwa ng mga disciples nung nakita nila ang Panginoon. 21 Sinabi ulit ni Jesus sa kanila, “Peace be with you. Kung paano ako pinadala ng Ama, pinapadala ko rin kayo.”
22 At hiningahan nya sila at sinabi, “Tanggapin nyo ang Holy Spirit! 23 Kung papatawarin nyo ang kasalanan ng mga tao, napatawad na sila. Pero kung di nyo sila papatawarin, di rin sila pinatawad.” The Gospel of the Lord. Source: The New Testament Pinoy Version Catholic Edition
LIVING THE GOSPEL 1. SITUATION Were there moments in your life when you helped other people be reconciled with one another? What happened?
LIVING THE GOSPEL 2. GOSPEL THEME Reconciliation is central to the mission entrusted to the disciples and enabled by the Spirit. This reconciling presence is also to be a way of life for Christians. In situations of conflict, we are to be agents of peace and harmony among people.
LIVING THE GOSPEL 3. GOSPEL CHALLENGE Just as Jesus sent his disciples to forgive the sins of others, so too are we sent to bring peace to the world with the help of the Holy Spirit. Sit quietly for a few minutes and invite the Holy Spirit to help you reflect if there is a situation or an issue within the family that needs attention and on how this might be addressed. To end, share to one another a Sign of Peace.
TRIVIA: PENTECOST Pentecost comes from the Greek word “Pentecoste” meaning 50th day. We are reminded that fifty days after Easter the Holy Spirit was given to the disciples. He gave them power to speak in strange tongues to the crowds that came to Jerusalem for the Feast. He also transformed them from selfish and timid men into giants of courage and faith. This same Holy Spirit that the disciples received is still with us at the present time. Pentecost is often referred to as the “birthday of the Church”.
CLOSING PRAYER Dear Jesus, Make us your instruments of your peace to this world. In your name we pray. Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be...
