“ We shall accumulate machinery and establish steel works, iron foundries and factories; we shall link the various states of our Continent with communications; we shall astound the world with our hydroelectric power; we shall drain marshes and swamps, clear infested areas, feed the undernourished, and rid our people of parasites and disease. It is within the possibility of science and technology “ENGINEERING” to make even the Sahara bloom into a vast field with verdant vegetation for agricultural and industrial developments” . President Kwame Nkrumah, first speech at the foundation summit of the Organization of African Unity, Addis Ababa, 24 May 1963 Engineering for Sustainable Development to Achieve the Africa we want 2

Introduction • Engineering and other interventions are answers and enablers to deliver our FAEO Vision 2063 which is inspired by the AU AGENDA 2063 and the UN Agenda 2030 on SDGs for people, planet and prosperity and the Strategies contained in the AU Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) 16-25/ Science, Technology & Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA) 2024. • FAEO calls for the ethical practice of engineering by infusing competences that promote professionalism and zero tolerance to corruption and high levels of integrity. • FAEO commits to raising awareness of the importance of accreditation of engineering qualifications and competence assessment to global standards to allow for mobility and recognition of qualifications; • FAEO also joins other organisations in building political and financial commitment for the development of national engineering accreditation and competence assessment bodies for the rest of Africa. • We have ECSA as Africa’s sole representative in the IEAM family, and we now concerted interest from other countries like (Nigeria, Rwanda – under the FEIAP mentorship), Mauritius, Ghana, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe who are in various stages of the preparation and will ride on the WFEO/IEA MoU and other capacity building efforts. UNESCO Africa Engineering Week (AEW) – A Platform for Collaboration WORLD FEDERATION OF ENGINEERING ORGANIZATIONS UNESCO AEW is an excellent platform for promoting quality engineering education and engineering capacity building in Africa and to cooperate with UNESCO/WFEO/IEA to extend the global reach of standards of FAEO by offering mentoring programmes and other co-operation activities. 5
About FAEO • At a General Assembly of 8th May 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya, it was unanimously agreed to merge the former Federation of African Organizations of Engineers (FAOE) and the Africa Engineering Forum (AEF) formed in 1972 and 2001 respectively, and establish a central united home for African Engineering Organisations under the name Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO). FAEO represents the African Engineering Agenda at the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO), The African Union (AU)and any other International Organisations. • The FAEO constitution was unanimously accepted and adopted. The FAEO Constitution recognises five regional groups to work under FAEO. The five regional groups are in alphabetical order are: • Central African Federation of Engineering Organisations (CAFEO); • Eastern African Federation of Engineering Organisations (EAFEO); • North African Federation of Engineering Organisations (NAFEO); • Southern African Federation of Engineering Organisations (SAFEO) – This involved only changing the name from AEF to SAFEO, aligning to the FAEO Constitution and making minor adjustments to the protocol, secretariat and operations of the former AEF; and. • West African Federation of Engineering Organisations (WAFEO). FAEO VISION “To be the leading engineering professional body offering sustainable development solutions for the benefit of humankind in Africa and beyond . ” Our Motto “To Achieve the AU Agenda 2063 through Engineering for Sustainable Development to Create the Africa we want.” Our Mission > To Serve humanity through the use of best practiced technology. > To represent the African engineering profession. 7 Engineering for Sustainable Development to Achieve the Africa we want
The Path we Have Walked as FAEO • Created the Engineering Capacity Building Initiative for Africa to be operationalized through the AU Department of Human Resources, Science and Technology Agreement of Co-operation which FAEO signed in 2017 that calls for an Action and Results oriented mindset in our operations in Africa. • We have signed MoUs with International Organisations to mobilise support and Development for the Africa want. We will this week engage UNESCO on a more comprehensive hands on relationship for more activities in Capacity Building, Gender, Water and Energy. • FAEO has positioned Africa for International Engineering Leadership at WFEO: • Engineering Capacity Building (Hosted by South Africa) • Anti-Corruption (Hosted by Zimbabwe) • Women in Engineering (Hosted by Nigeria) • Working Group on Global Infrastructure Report Card • (Hosted by Federation of African Engineering Organisations) 8
The Path we Have Walked as FAEO • Together with WFEO & UNESCOO we have driven the success of the AEW to be the brand that is now . • We have started the first Africa Engineering Conference AEW which premiered in Nigeria and is now in its fourth edition. • We have facilitated Funding opportunities for PEIs and infrastructure development reporting in Africa (Scorecard Reports). • We have taken part in the UNESCO Engineering Report No. 2 (ERII) soon to be launched. • Engineering Capacity Building (Hosted by South Africa) • Anti-Corruption (Hosted by Zimbabwe) • Women in Engineering (Hosted by Nigeria) • Working Group on Global Infrastructure Report Card • (Hosted by Federation of African Engineering Organisations) 9
Global In Industry ry Player Viewpoint • Engineers play a critical role in fueling the global economy. Industry needs highly educated, entrepreneurial engineers to ensure innovation and technological leadership for us to catchup or leapfrog. • Industry needs engineers who strive for the best in a high – performance global market. • Industry needs a new breed of engineer that are: • technically broad, • commercially savvy and • globally adept 27/11/2019 10
Africa’s Engineering Capacity Building Put in Context • The majority of Infrastructure Development is for- seen to happen in the African Continent • Our wish is by 2024 at least 50% of infrastructure development should be done by citizens of Africa using their beneficiated materials. • We have the Batoka Gorge Project ? What’s the involvement of our local engineers? 27/11/2019 11
True Glo lobal l Transformation Vis ision f for the Afric ican Continent: • Citizens within Africa should direct, par-take and benefit from their infrastructure development projects in Africa for their full social and economic transformation.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED? • The international markets have already entered our space • E.g Renewable Energy no localised manufacturing for African Governments and Engineers • The AU Agenda 2063 should address this weakness. • The real competitor is beyond the boundaries of the African Continent!!!!
